While being threatened and "held at gunpoint" is certainly an extremely serious threat to the guy at the register, it was not described as "had a gun to the clerks head." Do you have additional information? Part of my point is, when the bad guys come in with guns and you are still in the holster, you're way, way behind, and intervening at that point may cause the death of the person you intend to save. Did he know the robbers were going to shoot the clerk? No. We know that now, because they didn't shoot the clerk. Exactly! I would think very seriously before pulling a gun against three armed thugs.
Actually I would be more worried if I had a .40, .45, or .357 because with added recoil follow up shots are not as fast.
