Secondary handgun

I was wondering what a good secondary handgun would be? I currently have a Sig p226 with standard mags. So I was just wondering if there is a malfunction or problem with my firearm I'd like to have a backup. I've always had the mind set to have a min. of one if not two backup plans in case something happens. I haven't shot any compacts or sub compacts as of yet and I figured this would be the best place to ask what others use and count on. Thank you in advance

It all depends on what size you would consider to be a good backup to your primary. The Ruger LCP is a good pocket pistol in .380. The Bersa CC in .380 is a bit bigger. The Beretta Tomcat in .32 acp is nice and small. The North American Arms Guardian in .380 or .32 acp.

a s&w chiefs special model 60 makes a great backup gun. beretta 32, walther ppk, bersa thunder, charter arms .38, list goes on and on.

Very very true. I know its a very long list of back up guns I'm already going to be carrying the sig in 9mm, I was thinking another 9mm might be alright or if I'm willing to go down a few rounds would it be worth going to a 40 or is a 380 enough for a good back up round. I was thinking of possibly, glock, smith and wesson, not sure how the smaller sig sauer's are, or possibly beretta.

The 239 and 229's are excellent firearms. I've heard nothing but good things about the 238, and the 938 has a lot of good features. As far as I know the SIG magazines are not interchangeable between the full size and smaller models. Obviously not with the 938, 238, and 239. If you want a backup in the same caliber with interchangeable magazines... Go with Glock. You can carry a 17 and a 19 or a 26. Your full size magazines will work with all of your backups too.

If you're talking BUG I keep it simple, S&W 442 .38 spl. And as I believe in redundancy I have a spare P226 just as I have a spare 1911.

My BUG is a Colt Mustang Pocketlite, updated and reissued by Colt last year. The Sig P238 is a copy that came about when Colt discontinued and sold the specs to Sig. If you like a 1911, you'll like either of them. With a .380 all your 9mm cleaning tools will work. With advances in ammunition, a .380 is fully acceptable as a backup.

Check out the Sig P228. It is literally a downsized version of the P226 and it's an awesome carry piece. It can use the same mags from the P226 though not vice versa. I used one as my primary ccw for a while and was very happy with it. My wife ended up stealing it and selling it, but that is a story for a different day...

While I rarely see the need for a BUG, I'm forced to venture into North Las Vegas (the crime capitol of the Vegas Valley) on occasion. Then, I supplement my IWB G26 with an LCP in my front pocket. A Blackhawk #1 works well to carry it.

If you had $1000 to spend then look at the Boberg XR9. I found out about it from another person on this forum and though I haven't shot one they look like a very quality gun. Also, 9mm is a plus with a gun this small. Check it out.

Thank you everyone. To Shoobee, there are several reason I asked about a back up gun a) what happens if your gun has a malfunction, b) the backup/secondary magazine has a problem, c) if you do have to ever use your gun and your with a friend/girlfriend/boyfriend if they dont have a gun or they normally dont carry hell they can get the backup gun and help, d) in the very unlikely case you runn out of ammunition then what? e)the gun is dropped or in a struggle in knocked away then what? Granted most of these are in a very off chance of anyone of them happening but one thing I have learned is to always have a backup plan in case something does happen to the primary plan or the like it is always good to have several different options and it goes to the saying better to have it and not need it then not have it and need it

In that case how about a LC9?

Thank you very much. I will have to make my way to the gun store and the range to both see how the guns feel and more so how they are when shot. I'm looking at the sig sauers, the glocks, and the smith and wessons
