Seat belts

The seat belt law was one of the most un-american laws ever passed. It showed all citizens how easy it is for the feds to impose any restrictions that they want to upon the citizens of this country.

Seat belt law what's this law you speak of? Oh yeah that's right in New Hampshire we live by our state motto "Live Free Or Die!" We don't have a seat belt law and every attempt to pass one has failed! The only thing they changed was making it 18 and above (so all the kids would be safe). I laugh my ass off when I see the "Cops across the country are cracking down DOES NOT MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE click it or ticket".

The Insurance underwriters of North America can be thanked for that one...

Mitigating risk, risk to the investors...

There is more out there to be read on the subject. Google it... Eventually the right of the gun owner will come under fire...

The next personnel freedom that I believe will come under heavy fire soon will be smoking and the use of tobacco products. With the government controlled, socialist style health care system that was thrust upon us by the democrats, the mitigation (if not complete elimination) of risk factors leading to increased operational costs will become a main focus. Any behavior that is deemed unhealthy will be up for debate. I pray to God that the socialist health care reform BS is repealed and intelligence prevails...

I wear my seat belt not because I'm told to, but because I spent some time on a volunteer fire/rescue team. I've seen the damage that the energy of momentum and inertia can do to the human body, first hand...

Now smoking is one thing I will be glad to SEE gone. It's so gross and it effects more then just the person smoking the cancer stick!

Ya. I like those people who bitch about my cigar (organic natural vegetable matter) and then hop in their V8 powered Suburban SUV and spew toxic fumes into the air.

How come the government says you have to have an anchor and line, fire extinguisher, flare gun, paddle, horn, lights, and wear a life jacket on deck when underway on a boat, and nobody says boo. But then fight like hell about a seat belt in a car? I don't get it.:fie:

So does the exhaust from your car! Stop Driving!

True, it does. But I don't park my car at the front door of a store and make every shopper walk through it. But you are right some people (the lazy obese assholes, the ones you see in the motorized wheelchairs) park in the NO parking zone (fire zone) because they cant walk their fat a** five feet to the door. Kids cant speak up and say "Hey mom & dad your killing my lungs put that out". When the government rolls out the new packaging next year (the coffin ,dead body, person with cancer and so on...) It will paint the cancer sticks for what they are. Maybe we can save some of our young ones from the hard ships of smoking.

But anyway, back to the topic at hand! Less people have a problem with all the safety equipment needed in a boat, because many people don't know how to swim (yes even in this day and age). I always wear my seat belt, because I have no desire to go through the windshield! But I always carry a knife and or seat belt cutter in my cars should I need to get out and the seat belt is stuck. Just like car insurance, even though by New Hampshire law your not required to have it to drive your car. I still have it just in case!

While I do not agree with the law of my state which requires me to do so..I cannot ignore the laws of physics. I wear a seat belt. I wear a helmet on my bike and ATV for the exact same reason. But it is MY choice. What my neighbor does is HIS choice. And neither the state nor I should have any say in that.

But to have the government control an aspect of your life, what say you to that? Any habit, lifestyle, hobby, choice of vehicle perhaps,

All up for control and regulation or maybe a penalty for engaging in it...

I was a smoker... I recall the price being 50 cents per pack when I began. With all the taxes being added the prices are up to $8.00... It's still a choice for some and they should be free to make it. 2nd hand exposure is an issue I agree.

At some point a choice that affects you will come under fire...

Your right and that is where we see eye to eye. I have no problem with what people want to do in their lives. You want to smoke in your house, car, outside your house, hell even in the parking lot of a store go for it. I only take issue when what your doing effects me and my family. Point in case the Walmart in my city. The workers have a smoking area but are to lazy to walk to it when it's cold or wet. So they all stand just outside the goddamn door and start chain smoking. Just to get inside the store you have to walk through a cigarette firing squad. That's what I take issue with. Or the resturants who don't have an enclosed smoking area (back when you could smoke inside). Again I have no problem if you want to enjoy your meal with a smoke.

The 2nd hand thing is an issue. When I was a smoker that was something I was very conscious/cautious of. Most people have forgotten that for each right or freedom there is a responsibility linked to it. Keep each others rights in mind and exercise your own...

The seat belt thing is an individual choice, but since there is a dollar value attached to it now with insurance, there is control for the mitigation of risk...

All of our rights will eventually come under closer examination and possibly restriction, when the socialist health care reform law kicks our asses.. I've been living with it here in MA since 2006... Cost increases have been it's legacy...

I still say if you drive a car, you have NO right to bitch about people smoking. The fumes a car puts out in a day is like what a person smokes in a life time, and you have NO control over where those emissions go, for example, into my yard or house.

The same can be said about smoking! You have no control over the smoke after you exhail it! I have every right to bitch about Cancer sticks just as you have the right to bitch about automobile's! Something called the 1st AMENDMENT maybe you have heard about it  That's ok we can agree to disagree on this matter! Now lets get back on topic.

Anyone with a rudimentary grasp of the laws of physics can figure out that it just makes sense to wear a seatbelt. I don't need the government to tell me it's smart.....I can figure that out myself.

I can still remember one of the many videos they made us watch in driver training called "RED ASPHALT". No idea when they made it I think the 70's or 80's it's really old. This was all the reminder I needed to put on my seat belt and not speed.

I stand corrected. I should have started the statement with; "Unless you want to be a hypocrite..."

My apologies.
