I've recently decided to look into purchasing my first 1911. I know there are endless options out there and im just looking for some feedback about experiences with some of the popular ones and any suggestions or what features to look for.

Since its my first 1911 i think i want to stay under $800. i know this limits the possibilities but ive read reviews and i know there are a bunch of good ones out there for this money.

I would suggest the Rock Island Amory M1911A1 mil spec. I picked one up for $377. Great piece, just needed different grips. eBay!

Another thing about the RIA M1911A1, a lot of competition shooters choose the RIA one as the base that they mod like crazy for competition, or at least I am told.

I found one for $420 that had some extras and was not mil spec. Called the shop in PA to see if they had it and no they did not, but they had the pure mil spec one for $365 shipped. I jumped on it. FFL here charged $10-$15 per transfer.

awesome!! Ill check it out thanks!! Have the rock islands had any trouble with JHP? Ive heard some other 1911s can be finicky with them.

I bought a RIA 1911 38 super out of the box I was hitting center mass at 15, 25, and 50. Best money I've spent on any weapon.

I have the .45ACP. I have had issues with JHP. When you look for the ammo try to find some with close to the same nose profile of FMJ. Federal Hydroshok worked for mine but YMMV. As always run a few mags through it to be sure. And RIA only come with one mag, but there are a lot of 8rd mags on the market. Any made for the Colt Gov Model should work, but just make sure of it with a live fire.

Oh and they come with the ugliest blonde smooth grips. I just ordered some Colt rosewood diamond patterned (for the Colt Gov Model) ones off of eBay. $30. They even have the notch in the back of the right one for an abi safety. I don't use one, but I can if I want. Also any sight change will be a pain. The front sight is staked not dovetail.

Citadel 1911. The Guns.com reviewer had this to say:

I’ve owned a lot of pistols over the years, but only a very select few did I have complete faith and trust in as a carry weapon. The Citadel M1911 is one of them, and I do not make that statement lightly. For the money, I think the Citadel M1911 is hard to beat. Link Removed

The standard Citadel 1911 with wood grips sold by Cabela's is $550, and they have another on one their web site right now with OD green Hogue grips, 2-8 round mags w/slam pads, skeletonized trigger/hammer, and extended beavertail for better control, $599.
