Think about it: The people who are most against the idea of the average American exercising their Second Amendment right to protect themselves by carrying a legally-owned firearm, individuals who have been background-checked, trained in the legalities of carrying, have demonstrated their ability to safely handle a firearm - and done so out of their own time and money - are the individuals who have the least with which to be concerned when it comes to their own safety. The Pres/VP, billionaire mayor Bloomberg, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, David Brock (the Pres. of Media Matters, one of the most virulently anti-Second Amendment organizations in the country, whose personal armed security guard, with Brock's full knowledge, illegally carried his firearm into DC while accompanying Brock to a meeting with a donor to receive a $400K donation), Gov. Snyder, Oprah, and a host of other moneyed or politically connected individuals all oppose the Constitutional right to bear arms - but they are all protected by armed guards themselves or carry their own firearms. Sen. Feinstein - it came out this week that while she is supporting legislation to limit LEGAL firearms carry, she herself possess a concealed pistol license and has carried a firearm for her own protection. This was her statement: "I know the sense of helplessness that people feel. I know the urge to arm yourself because that's what I did. I was trained in firearms. I walked to the hospital when my husband was sick. I CARRIED A CONCEALED WEAPON AND I MADE THE DETERMINATION IF SOMEBODY WAS GOING TO TRY AND TAKE ME OUT, I WAS GOING TO TAKE THEM WITH ME." Interesting. That same declaration is made by thousands of average Americans each day - but they can't be trusted like Sen. Feinstein.
So the message is clear - it is OK for elitists who don't have to be concerned about waiting 20 minutes or longer for the police to respond to their 911 call to either carry firearms themselves or employ others to do it for them, but the average citizen is supposed to be satisfied to wait for overworked, understaffed police departments to come to their aid. In Grand Rapids, MI, the average response time to a 911 call is nearly 20 minutes, and according to the Crime Prevention Office, they anticipate that number to increase as Grand Rapids loses even more officers in the very near future. I have been unable to find Kalamazoo's average response time. In Detroit, the average response time is well in excess of 25 minutes. But the social and political elite appear to think there's nothing wrong with requiring the average citizen to accept that, while they, themselves, either carry their own firearms or employ their own response teams and armed body guards.
Sorry, that is not acceptable to me and a host of others. Is this picture an overstatement? Maybe. But it illustrates the basic problem that those who have the most protection from dangers, both real and imagined, are the ones who are telling the rest of us that we must be satisfied with a lesser right to self-defense.
