Rotterdam police are developing a mobile scanner that will enable them to see through people's clothing and look for concealed weapons, a Dutch daily reported Saturday.

The force has been given a 500,000-euro government grant to develop the mobile weapons detector, the NRC said.

The aim is to develop a prototype ready for production within three years.

The mobile detector would enable the search to be carried out more quickly and would only be used on people suspected of carrying concealed weapons, police spokesman Paul De Kruijf told the paper.

Giampiero Gerini, a professor at Eindhoven University of Technology told the paper the technology to develop such scans is now mature.

"The biggest challenge is making it portable and ensuring it can carry out a scan in seconds," the NRC quoted him as saying.

hmm the problem I see with this is a simple privacy problem. So they can scan and see through my clothes with out me knowing? I find it hard thats gonna be legal in the states its sad that other countries dont enjoy the same freedoms that we are SUPPOSE to enjoy.

There is no law or invention that cannot be abused -- and if it can be abused, Government WILL abuse it.

I wonder how freaked the cops using that toy would be if they encountered someone with woven metallic clothing...

I wonder how close to a person a dog has to be to detect a firearm?
I have an SAR (Search and Rescue) dog...a Rottweiler. But he is not into guns and ammo powders and chemicals. He is into locating people. They do not need to be really close to people at all in distance. People's sweat is in the air and on the ground. When my boy was as young as 6 months, there was a runner who passed by the side of our house (it is a street there). My husband was about to take him out for a walk. He dragged my husband to where the guy went even though the guy had already turned a corner or two (?) My husband told me this so I decided to enrol him in SAR. He is good! Anyway, I digress....sorry...

Someone emailed me the details of dogs that can detect the chemical that this panty bomber used but I tossed it out because it is too late to teach my dog drugs and chemical stuffs now...but I know it is more cheaper to have trained dogs than those machines. Safer too for everybody. I think the government is really doing these all wrong. We should actually be learning from the Israelites who had been into these profiling and security business for a long time...we are 50 years behind when it comes to security.

Someone once told me that 5 miles was how far their dog could sniff. I suppose that might be true if a smell was in the air as you said, like the ocean breezes I used to smell in the afternoon with the on-shore flows even though I lived a few valleys inland. Have you used your dog in S&R or does he work with someone else? That would be fascinating and fun to watch, not in an emergency, just in a trials setting.

I trained him but hubby brings him to emergencies when we got a call. He has quite a few accomplishments. Trials are mine. He's constantly in training. I love dog training. Unfortunately, our younger one here is not into SAR...he is more into Rally. I guess they have their own calling. This is what I like in Rotties -- they just love training.
