S & w or ruger in the 357

Both are fine guns. Go with whatever feels most comfortable in your hand. Expect the S&W to be substantially more expensive than the Ruger.

Given the choice, i would definatly go with the S&W, had a 101, nice gun, but prefer my 686, barrels abit longer, but just like the smiths grip and feel better,

I have the GP100, SP101 and LCR and i have had no problems with any of them, the LCR is the most comfortable to carry and the GP100 is the most pleasant to shoot, but quite large to carry. The LCR is really abusive when shooting .357 rounds while the others are pleasant with most any ammo and the SP101 while heavier than the LCR is still great for CC. These revolvers are built really strong and dependable and are able to withstand heave use and heavy loads better than a Smith, but for most people with proper care either will provide years of dependable service. The one that fits your hand best and appeals to you the most is the one you should go for and you will be happy with it.

If you're looking for a compact, concealable revolver, Ruger SP101, 2.25 inch barrel, bobbed hammer, dump the factory grips and put on some Hogue grips. SUH-WEEEEET!!!!!!!

I have a SP101 and carry it the most. You cant go wrong with either one but the model will depend on what you are going to use it for. Home defense GP100/686 it's all good. Carry LCR/SP101/sith light weight...all are good.

I've owned... in .357...RUGER: SpeedSix, SecuritySix(4&6"), GP100 4", SP101 2.25", Blackhawk(Blued4" & Stainless 5.5")......S&W 586(4&6"), 686(4&8"), 27, 642 C.T., 60(3"), 60(3'Pro)

Rugers always seemed to be a 'heftier' beast in like-&-kind frames compared to S&W, and they, like S&W, are utterly dependable.

S&W seem to be 'flashier', smoother actioned, more 'refined' (finish-wise), and definitely higher priced. (Whether the higher price of S&W is worth that higher price is highly subjective to personal opinion).

I've owned MANY revolvers from both companies and the only failure I ever had of any type was the 642 S&W internal lockwork seizing up, and S&W replaced the frame in quick order (about 2 weeks).

I would settle on whatever feels the best in your hand, and shoots best for you. Neither of the two brands you mentioned actually 'shoots' straighter or handles 'better' than the other...EXCEPT that truly, S&Ws have always had a smoother out-of-box Double Action. In Single Action firing, they each have their attributes, and score about equal overall for me.

Be fore-warned, AirWeight .357's are nice to carry, but wrist wreckers to fire with hot loads. If you want a small one for carry, the stainless 2.25" SP101 Ruger might be a bit heavier, but you'll appreciate the extra weight when practicing, and you'll probably practice more because of the extra weight (comfort). You will quickly forget the extra weight if you carry in a decent holster...and there are a ton of them!

Good luck with your choices

Happy Shootin'

Smiths are great guns, don't get me wrong, but I love my SP101. If I wanted a pocket pistol that gave me the ability to fire from inside a pocket, I'd go with a Smith because the SP101 doesn't have a shrouded hammer. But I don't need that kind of pistol. As for full size revolvers, my wife has a Ruger Police Service Six with pachmayr grips that is hands down the best shooting handgun I have ever fired. Nothing else has ever come close to the fit and comfort of that gun. It truly feels like an extension of my hand. Too bad they don't make them anymore. The Security Six is quite similar though. I made the mistake of giving that one to my wife years ago and I've been trying to get it back for a long time, but she won't give it back. It's the best gun she's ever fired too.

RUGER ! I have owned many guns but RUGER is #1 in my book. RUGER = reliability. Easy to handle and goes bang when the trigger is pulled. My current favorite is a 357 mag security six with a 4 inch barrel which isnt available new anymore BUT can be found used. Smith is a good gun BUT over priced IMHO. Also more Rugers are sold than Smiths.

I agree. Smith's are prettier and slicker, Ruger's are tougher and vastly stronger.

I have the Ruger GP 100. It is 40 oz in 4" stainless, so no lightweight. However, it soaks up recoil very well, and shooting .38 spl out of it is a joy. It is slightly heavier and slightly larger than a comparable K-frame Smith and Wesson, and less expensive. I like the trigger on the Ruger, very smooth. They are well built and will last longer than our lifetimes.

If you're willing to buy used, a pre-lock S&W. I've got three, a 3" Model 65, a 3 1/2" Model 27-2 and a 6" Model 27-2.

Otherwise, a Ruger or a Dan Wesson.

I would NEVER buy a S&W with the internal lock.
