I know I'm going to get one of the longer versions of the .500 or the .460 but have not done enough research to find out which one I prefer. This thread is part of my research regarding this issue. If you have a reason why you prefer one over the other It would be of great interest to me. Ok thanks all.

What exactly are you going to use it for? For deer, antelope, etc. at any kind of range, I would get the .460. For bear, moose, etc. or if hunting deer only in the thick woods, I would go with the .500. Keep in mind that you can shoot the .460 for less because of its ability to run .454 Casull and .45 Colt ammo as well as the .460.

the .460 has MUCH longer range than the .500. also, the versatility of being able to fire .454 Casull and .45 Colt is a major plus in my opinion.

After consulting several individuals, I have found the majority is selecting the .460 XVR. It also seems that they are hard to come by. I received a quote today for a S&W .460 XVR with a 12" barrel. The price was $1,385.00 for the weapon. I believe that is a good market price. I plan to trade in my AR-15 for this weapon.

.460 S&W would be my choice. Much more versatile gun. The .460 S&W also runs about 300 ft-lbs more muzzle energy than the .500 does for hunting ammo. Much better long range performance.
