Rust/corrosion on a S&W 686-1 nickel revolver

I have been given a S&W686-1 but it has rust/corrosion on the finish. What is the most effective and safest way to remove? G96 and a toothbrush or baking soda/water paste?

Thanks

That's actually a stainless finish and not nickle. Superfine steel wool and WD40 works well. Then wipe it down really good and put a fine coat of BreakFree CLP or light oil.

Right answere on the stainless steel finish of the 686. There were no such thing's as a nickel finish S & W 686 produced. I would suggest that if you have the money for it that you let someone that know's what they are doing take the weapon completley apart and clean it properly inside and out. If it is rusty on the outside then I am sure that it is rusty on the inside.
