Ruger SR9c light strikes

I ordered my SR9c back in April. I've only been able to take it out a few times so I haven't been able to put it through the paces as much as I'd like.

The first range trip right after I got it I shot roughly 150 rounds of mixed WWB and Federal bulk. The very first round in the gun was a light strike. This was WWB in the 17 round mag. Fired the rest and put that one back in and it went off. Fired the 10 round mag fine. Put the 17 rounds back in and one more light strike halfway through. WWB again. Shot about 100 more that day WWB and Federal fine.

Obviously the gun was packed with grease when I got it. I had stripped it and cleaned everything except the striker pin channel thoroughly so I attributed these 2 light strikes to a new gun not being cleaned properly. I had also over lubed the other parts so I'm sure that affected it.

I cleaned it again removing the striker mechanism this time. The next range trip was about another 150 rounds with no issues. Think I tried Federal, WWB, and Tula this time. Cleaned again waited for the next trip.

Yesterday I put about another 150 rounds through it. Used Tula, WWB, and Remington JHP's. About 100 rounds in I get one more light strike with Tula in the 17 round magazine. I finished the mag and put the round back in. It didn't go off but I THINK I forgot to put the magazine back in. I honestly don't remember. If I didn't then there's an obvious reason it didn't go off, the disconnect safety at work. Put the round in my LC9 and it fired.

So my dilemma is do I go ahead and sent it back right now or make another range trip and wait? I called Ruger today and of course they were extremely helpful and will gladly fix it. I just don't know if these failures would be considered acceptable considering they were only with cheap ammo. I carry the Remington JHP's and they fired fine. So what would you guys do in this situation?

I had a problem with light strikes with my 17 round mag in the SR9C. In fact...mine would not fire with the 17 round mag in at all (the 10 round mag worked flawlessly). I called Ruger and they said they needed me to send the gun and mags in so they could look it over and test fire it. Reluctantly I sent it in (I just wanted the to swap 17 round mags with me). They had the gun and mags for about 3 weeks. The replaced the striker assembly and both mags, and it now functions perfectly with both mags.

One thing I noticed before I sent it in was a spot on topof the 17 round mag that looked like it was being hit by the slide when it engaged (the bluing was rubbed off the top left side of the mag). This may have been what was causing the light strikes....mag interfering with the slide and not letting it seat fully.

Excellent service by Ruger, by the way. They emailed me a shipping label for all the shipping costs, and I wasn't charged a thing for them to fix it. It just took a little longer than I liked to get it fixed.

Good luck.

Doing the same thing and expecting different results is maybe not so good an idea. Send your gun and mags in to Ruger for repair.

I have an SR9C... I use both the ten an 17 round mags... I have not had a problem with them at all. I shoot Winchester, Federal, FMC, Blazer. I have not had an issue with any of these rounds. I trust it enough to be a carry!

I also have the SR9C. I use Federal, Winchester and Hornedy with my 10/17 round mags without any issues. I will not use Tula because of the steel casings and I am told it's a very dirty firing ammo. Bottom line is you need to feel confident that your firearm will function properly. if you don't...send it back to Ruger. They have excellent customer service!

I used to get an occasional failure to fire with my SR9c when I used Tula ammo. Solution: I don't use Russian ammo in it anymore. It has always performed flawlessly with Federal or Winchester. Some firearms are just finicky about their diet.

I took it out this past Sunday and put another 150 rounds through it mixing Federal, WWB, and Remington JHP and FMJ. Didn't have any issues. I'm fairly sure the 1 light strike last time was just the ammo. I'm going to try to steer clear of Tula unless Federal or WWB is out of stock.
