Looking at them, Currently have a XD 9 subcompact that is to wide to comfortably carry. Looking @ S&W shield & Ruger SR9. ?

I'd recommend you look at the SR9C rather than the full size SR9. It is more comparable in size to the Shield. I own a SR9C and a Shield 40. I normally carry the Shield but occasionally opt for the Ruger. Either is a fine choice.

Since width seems to be your major complaint with the XD9 I would definitely recommend the S&W Shield (0.95") over the Ruger SR9c (1.27") as it will be considerably thinner. You could also consider the Ruger LC9 (0.90"), however, as it's width is much more comparable to the Shield's and it would be inexpensive yet reliable.

I have been concealed carrying an SR9 for years. Bought it before the SR9C was out. Main difference is the length, weight and capacity. The main thing I have noticed in shooting them both is the SR9C, being smaller yet firing the same ammo, has more recoil, as most compact guns do.
I like the "Made in USA" of the Ruger products. My purchase money is staying here in America, and not going, out of country like to Germany, Belgium, Mexico, South America, ETC.

If you like the Xd9 subcompact you could get the Xd-s in 9mm or 45ACP. The SR9C are very nice pistols but I can never get used to that odd scallop out of the front part of the grip, The Shield is a fantastic pistol. My current EDC is a SIG P290 but you really have to want true DOA to carry that one.(I find the trigger pull much to my liking but I started out shooting revolvers in DAO and this is the closest to that)

Just ordered an SR9c from my LGS. I started as an XDm guy, and they do still feel like an extension of my own hand. For the short time that I did have an SR9c before (got rid of it... regret that move), it felt as good as - if not better than - my XDm and was more accurate. The grip was just way comfortable for me. The recoil was a bit harsher than my XDm's (understandable, since the XDm is a heavier gun), so I chose to stick with the latter and made a hasty choice to sell it. Can't wait to get it back and shoot the hell out of it.

Also, love the made in America aspect. You can't go wrong with one. Lots of reviewers out there have written about shooting thousands upon thousands of rounds with theirs and can't make them fail.
