Ruger SR1911 : First Impression

I bit the bullet and bought a Ruger SR1911. I was finally able to take it to the range today and shot 250 rounds of CCI Blazer 230 gr FMJ through it. Right out of the box at 25 yards, I had no problem holding very decent shot groups, the three dot Novak sights were right on! The gun fits great in the hand and instinctively stays on target. I had no misfires or misfeeds. The dove tail safety fits snug in the meaty part of your palm and smoothly over the top of the thumb/index finger web. The checker grips don't bite the hand and give a good griping surface that keeps the gun from jumping around and changing your grip. Cycling the weapon is easy due to the short guide rod/lighter spring assembly and the slide release lever is easy to operate while in combat. The trigger pull is probably right around 5lbs (don't have gauge) and smooth. The magazine slip in and out of the well easily with no hang ups or drag. I let several other people at the range who had .45's take it for a test drive and all were equally impressed with the guns performance and were amazed at the price given it that its SS. I have a Cold 19991A1 and love that gun, but not as much as i love the SR1911. This is one awesome US made firearm!

Do yourself a favor and function check your SR 1911. A friend brought over his new SR 1911 that he'd put 150 rounds through. I was impressed with the overall appearance of the firearm but when I did a function check it failed the thumb safety check.

(Insure the firearm is empty) With the Hammer back and the safety on take a firing grip with one hand and pull the trigger HARD, release the trigger and disengage the thumb safety. The hammer SHOULD NOT drop. My buddy's did.

@Purple: that's the same experiance I had when I first shot my SR1911, it is an excellent peice of machinery!
@SGB: I'm sure Ruger would fix the problem for your buddy. I did the dry fire drill for saftey checks and everything works fine.

I have no doubt they would. However my bud has decided he'd rather have me install all barstock cut tool steel fire control and a few other parts.

Love mine I've run about 500 rounds through it and no problems very acurate at 25 yards 1 3/4 groups!

All new guns in my possession get torn down, inspected, cleaned and lubricated before they ever have a round run through them. The functional checks are done after the guns is put back together. At the range, one round is sent down the barrel, the gun is checked for any loose parts and functional checks done on safety's (if equipped). Not a problem with this SR1911....your buddy must have gotten a bum one.

I ordered a Remington 1911 Enhanced because I couldn't find a SR1911 for less than $50 over MSRP. Well before I got my Remington in I checked Gander Mountain and they had just gotten 15 in so I did the smart thing (don't tell my wife!) and ordered one of the Rugers too! I really like em both but the Ruger is my favorite. BTW I checked the thumb safety on both and Seems like there was a mention in one or both owners manuals about checking that.
