Hi all! I'm new around here and new to pistol shooting...been lurking for a few months here while I pondered buying a handgun. I've been around guns my whole life and have shot long guns since I was a little kid. Up until a few months ago I had never fired a handgun.
I went to the gun range with my brother, and we fired a number of different handguns. One of my brother's guns is a Ruger Single Six .22 revolver that he uses for target practice. I liked that gun and thought that shooting targets with it was a lot of fun. Something about having to cock the hammer each time was just plain dorky fun. Plus it seems that .22 ammo is pretty cheap compared to other rounds. I decided to get one, spend a few months shooting with it, and then get a good home defense handgun and take some handgun handling and defense classes.
The problem that I'm having is that I can't find this gun locally. Since they are somewhat of a novelty item, obviously not many gun shops carry them. Since I'm a noob gun buyer, I'd rather be able to see and hold a gun before I commit to a purchase. One salesperson a few weeks ago made a snide remark when I asked about ordering one, saying something like "well man it's not the 1800s any more" (LOL ******* then I won't buy from you, thanks). I found a used one at a local shop but it looked to be in mediocre condition at best. I took a look at a number of magazine-fed .22 pistols, but to be honest I didn't like any of them. I felt it best to get the .22 revolver just for plinking targets and then get a semiautomatic for home defense.
What's my best bet? A gun show? Should I order a new one and then just sell it if I end up not liking it for some reason? Any advice that you experienced folks can give to a new gun buyer
Now since you've been nice enough to wade through my noob gun buying question, and since the standard on most Internet forums is "pics or GTFO," here's some gun porn. I stopped by a local gun store last night to see if they had any .22 target pistols in stock. They didn't, but I spent some time browsing and ended up making my first handgun purchase: a Beretta M9. I gave it a spin and really liked how it felt in my hand, the smooth trigger pull, and the weight. I'll use this as my home defense gun.
