RUGER LC9 vs. Taurus Millenium PRO 9mm

Ready to buy my first CCW...For sure want a 9mm subcompact...Did pretty deep research on LC9, but don't know anything about Taurus...How do these two compare?? Because of my limited budget, I really can't afford anything over $400......Thanks for sharing your experience....

Rugers have a reputation of being built like a tank. Tauruses have a reputation of building junk. YMMV.....

I have a Taurus PT709 Slim. Taurus has the same rep as most modern gun manufactures in that their first generation of a new product has some bugs they have to work out. But they are good about correcting it quickly and making it warrantee correction free of charge if you have one of the issues. To that, after that initial hump they are as dependable and durable as any other firearm out there. They use modern materials and machining methods. Some of their firearms are even built here. But if you are considering the LC9, you may want to look at the PT-709slim. I did, and didn't look back.

Old time thinking,

Rugers have a reputation of being built like a tank. Tauruses have a reputation of building junk. YMMV.....

Wrong, Taurus now and has for many years, make a fine weapon. I own several that outshoot my Glocks, for the money, you can't go wrong with Taurus Millenium.

I used to buy Ruger guns, till I started shooting my first PT-111. I now own the Millenium PT 145,PT 140,and PT 111. Only had 1 problem with my PT-845 that was worked out and back better than ever. I trust all my Taurus guns, have several hundred rounds through each of them.

If I was choosing, I would go with the Ruger. Every Taurus auto I've came across including the 709 had multiple issues of some kind. Always good to go with Ruger. I will not own any Taurus that I can think of. Some may swear by them, and that's fine if they like them. But they are not for me.

Thanks guys, keep feeding me, please!...That's exactly what kinda CCW info I'm looking for, from real people who use them, own them, shoot them...Otherwise I can look at manufacturers websites and read that I'm buying the best gun in the world and how lucky I am...I need the reality, not what is on paper...I really like this forum, because I can get an honest opinion, the gun selection will be up to me anyway!!

I have the Ruger LCP which is essentially the same as the LC9 except that it fires .380 ammo instead of 9mm. I am very happy with it, and should a problem arise, Ruger offers a lifetime warranty. I liked the simplicity of the LCP. I fired the LC9 at the range and found it to be more complicated, more levers and releases; however, it does fire the larger and less expensive 9mm ammo.

Ultimately, I recommend going to the range and paying the fee to try out any guns you are considering and having someone well versed on each gun explain the pros and cons of each before spending your hard earned money.

Thanks...I tried the LCP,really good price, very easy to conceal, but I have pretty large paws and I didn't feel comfortable with it...I know I have to give up something, so I better get a larger gun and spend more money than for LCP, but when I'll need to use it, it needs to feel right in my hand...And I do not plan to shoot it at range too often, probably once a month, shoot it, clean it, making sure is ready when I need it...

Friends don't let friends buy Taurus.

The Ruger LC9 is a good gun, as I'm sure your research has shown. My wife had been looking for a long time at the Taurus 709 Slim. As soon as the LC9 came out, we went to a gun shop to do a side-by-side comparison. She instantly liked the Ruger more than the Taurus. I asked her to wait on her decision since it was new.

Around that same time, Ruger issued a recall. Over the next 3-6 months I ran into report after report of LC9 owners who had problems with various malfunctions.

Much like brickler said, the first generation of almost anything ever produced will have its problems.

The more we compared the Ruger LC9 and Taurus 709 Slim, the more she was convinced to go with the Taurus. What more can I say about letting a woman go with her own intuition...I've been married for 22 years for a reason.
Personally, I have a PT-145, which is similar to the PT-111 that you're also considering. I've put it through all the paces to ensure that it would be reliable for me as an every day carry (EDC) weapon, particularly in the Summer.

Taurus is a reliable brand these days as much as any other. Consider brickler's advice as another Taurus owner with a good experience. It's worth some more research on your part to consider it as an alternative to the Ruger. For your first weapon, you owe it to yourself to compare the two. I carry either the Taurus PT-145 or a 40 S&W from another brand. If I was choosing a 9mm for myself, I would choose the Taurus 709 Slim.

One other thing I'll say is that the Taurus 709 Slim is 2 oz. heavier than the Ruger, and from everything I've both experienced and read, the heavier weapon (once you get used to the carry weight) is better for recoil and multiple shots. Otherwise, they're very similar.

Good luck with you decision!

From experience, I would recommend the Taurus PT111. If you're interested in stepping up to .45acp, the Taurus PT145 can fill that bill. They've both performed for me flawlessly!

My new favorite pocket 9 is the Beretta Nano. Same size as the Kahr PM9 and an awesome trigger. Paid $400 for mine.

+1 for the Beretta. I have not handled the Nano, but I would definitely take a good look at it before buying the Ruger. Taurus is completely out of the question regardless. The only way I would purchase a Taurus is if the only other gun was a High Point. But hey, that's just me.

Buy the Ruger. My preferred gun dealer no longer carries Taurus autos because of the number of problems his customers were having with them.

I used to have a LCP, and the biggest problem I had with it was the sights. Or the lack there of. They were very hard to see to me. I had a PT140 and loved how it shot and handled. But my wife could not handle it. I then picked a Kahr CW9, and really love it. I have not had any problems with it. I would recommend looking at those. You will have to look at used ones though to stay under 400 I believe. Most days I like to carry a Tarus model 850 ss snub nose 38. That is my go to ccw. I have more confident in revolvers than auto's. But that is just me.

I have the LC9 and love it. I just bought the Crimson Trace laser for it and love it as well. If you can get used to the long trigger pull you will love it as a carry gun.

actually ruger has no warranty. If you read the warranty card it is completely ther call whether or not they fix your gun regardless of malfunction. was just looking at lc9 in local gun shop the other day and they pointed it out to me and i read it for myself. That being said ruger stands behind there products from what i have heard with out any problems.
