As he was driving home on Sunday night, 81-year-old Florida resident James Stevens said he knew something was amiss after he Link Removed for about 20 minutes.
Stevens wasn’t about to lead the man tailing him to his Ocala, Fla. home, so he pulled over in a field. Sure enough, the Kia also stopped. In retrospect, the suspected robber would tell you he should’ve just kept on driving.
The quick-thinking 81-year-old then retrieved his .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver and got out of his truck, according to Marion County Sheriff’s Office reports.
Stevens told investigators that the driver of the Kia — later identified as Lonnie Lorenza Hollingsworth Jr., 28 — got out of the vehicle, approached him and demanded “everything you got,” reports state.
“I didn’t want to shoot him, but I had to. I shot him,” Stevens told deputies.
According to evidence photos, it appears that Stevens fired four rounds from the six-shot revolver.
Hollingsworth was shot once in the abdomen and was lying in the grass motionless when the first deputy arrived. The deputy began performing CPR until an ambulance arrived and paramedics took over. Hollingsworth was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition Monday afternoon.
Michelle Barron, a resident in the area of the shooting, called 911 and mistakenly thought Hollingsworth was dead.
“We have a dead person out here,” Barron told the 911 operator. “The guy that lives across the street was parking his truck in the field and someone tried to rob him and he shot him and killed him.”
Hollingsworth has had numerous run-ins with the law and was convicted in 2008 of carrying a concealed firearm and altering the serial number of a firearm. He also was charged with wearing a bulletproof vest in the commission of an attempted crime, but that charge was dropped.
Hollingsworth did not have a weapon Sunday, reports noted.
The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the incident. No charges had been filed late Monday.

Good for him! Bad for BG!

Hope Mr. Stevens doesn't have any legal issues. He shouldn't, but we all know how things work in this liberal society. Heck, I think he deserves a medal & the key to the city!

IMO, People who prey upon elderly folks diserve nothing less than what this guy got. My Father is in his mid 60s and can still handle himself but those days are numbered. We all have the right to protect ourselves but many of our elected servents do not understand this. Many do understand but are such control freaks that they want to do away with the idea of personal protection and teach learned helplessness.... The Government will protect you.... yeah right. What really burns me is the idea that many americans feel like they have to defend their rights with examples like this. I'm talking about defending the very idea of having these rights. I know we have to defend the bill of rights and the constitution but the opposition to freedom in a way says "give me a reason you need the 4th amendment" or the 1st amendment. As if these are negotiable. There seems to be a reversal of the idea of the sovereign. Our republic was designed as the citizens as the sovereign but the establishment has twisted it to make the people running the system the sovereign. They just pass any law they want without regard to what we the people want and make themselves exempt from any law they want. For example, Congress can "insider trade" without consenquence and many politicians get concealed carry in areas where it is nearly impossible for the citizens to obtain one. Now how did I get to this from a story about an 81 year old man blowing away a would be robber. IDK. I guess its all connected in some way.

One smart & very prepared senior citizen + One dumb young thug = A very bad day for the thug.

These kinds of 'self defense' stories bring a little smile to my face.

Mine, too. That thug got his just desserts. Quit molesting old people, or you get the wisdom they've earned through their years. :o)

When you mess with someone twice (or more) your age, understand -- we can't go 5-7 minutes with you, we have to just kill (or radically maim) you quickly and get it over with!!

Just remember we don't kill, we stop the threat. If the threat should die, oh well, he started it!

I live about 25 minutes from Ocala. I hope Mr. Stevens does not suffer any PTSD from this. I don't think he will face any legal issues but that is just an opinion.

I wonder how often this happens that the media doesn't report it?

Theres no telling how many times a day that a law abiding, gun carrying citizen has to pull his/hers weapon on some low life pond scum and they go scurrying away!

And they've never reported their active to law enforcement. I've never "used" mine before either but I've put my hand on it and they got the message.

I understand the rhetoric -- I also know that the ambulance needs to hurry because I have no equipment to protect myself from blood-borne pathogens if he has something I'm not aware of (Hepetitus, etc) and therefore am unable to render first aid.

Missed the quote and so reposted below
