Ok I think I'm done. So what do you guys think? Like it don't like it? Does it need more less?

One lesson learned is black stands out more then I would have thought. Next time I'll probably use brown instead.

Where is it? Oh there it is.:biggrin: All joiking aside it looks great. Perhaps you could do this as a second job.

Thanks HK4U. I had thought about it but I'd want to do a few with something a little more durable like KG or Duracoat first. But it would be a fun way to make a little extra cash.
 
Very nicely done! As far as the black, that will blend extremely well in anything other than direct sunlight

How much time total?

Thanks Red Hat! Not sure what's next. I may give the AR a paint job but have not made up my mind yet. I do need to figure something out to cut the reflection from the front of the scope. That sticks out like a sore thumb in the one picture

Thanks Retired Grunt. True about blending when not in direct sun. Hadn't thought about that and when taking pictures I wanted to have enough light for the pictures to turn out nice.

I learned a lot through trial and error so my next one should not take as long but all in all I have between 10 and 12 hours into this project.
 
Looks good KPB. ARD devices are sold or in a tight spot take a peice of Gorilla tape,cut a rectangle in the middle and stick it to the obj. Should work in all but low light conditions. Very nicely done.

This looks amazing! How did you do it if you dont mind me asking? Only reason I ask is I have wanted to do somthing like this with one of my ARs, I supposed I could do a google search but figured I would ask. Very nicely done, you are talented!

Thanks Capo. It's really not to hard just a bit time consuming.

As far as supplies this is what I used:
Krylon Camo Green
Krylon Camo Black
Krylon Camo Tan
Krylon Ultra Flat Clear
A roll on contact paper
Xacto knife
Graph paper
Blue painters tape

I took everything apart and cleaned it to remove and dirt, grease, or oil. Then taped everything I didn't want painted (trigger assembly, inside of the receiver, scope lenses, ect). After that was all done I sprayed base coat. I left mine the original color of the stock.

After the base coat dries it's time to get creative. I started cutting out patterns from the graph paper and laying them over the stock. I continued this until I was happy with the design. Remember this will cover the base coat and is what will be seen after the other two colors are applied.

After I was happy with the first set of templates I cut two pieces of contact paper that were slightly larger then the graph paper. I put the contact paper back to back (this allows you to cut once and have a template for the right and one for the left) and taped it together with a piece of graph paper on top. Once everything was taped together I traced out the template on the graph paper and cut them out using the xacto and a straight edge.

After getting all the templates cut out apply them to the stock and spray the next color. For me it was tan.

Once that dried I repeated the above to create and apply templates to the areas I wanted to leave tan. Once the templates were on I sprayed the last color green.

After I applied the last color and it dried I removed all the templates. At this point I create female templates and add some random color to blend everything together. I think this takes the most time.

Once I was happy with the design I sprayed it with the Ultra Flat Clear.

Now you just have to repeat the process for the barrel (if removed), scope, ect. It help if you put the parts back together as you're creating the templates. This helps keep the pattern flowing from stock to the barrel to the optics.

Wish I had taken pictures of the process but I hope this help explain it some what. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions. Oh and there are some companies that sell ready cut templates that would save you time. I think most sell for around $20. I went with the graph paper because I had a design/look I was going for and didn’t think I could get it using the pre cut stuff.
