Hey guys. I have a S&W Model 637 .38 special as my carry weapon, but it has a heavy trigger pull. What do you prefer, a revolver or pistol?

I have two main carry weapons. I use either depending on the situation. A Ruger SP-101 in .357 Mag and a Kimber Pro-Carry II in .45. practice with both and compete regularly with the Kimber in steel plate matches and concealed carry matches.

Depends on your preference and what works best for you. What works well for one person may not work well for the next person. The general advantages of pistols over revolvers are higher capacity, easier reloads and easier concealment. The advantages of revolvers are simplicity, ease of use and reliability. I too have a Ruger SP101 revolver that I will occasionally carry even though I normally carry a 45 auto. There are the rare occasions when the revolver works better for me.

Pros and cons to revolvers and pistols:
Revolvers:
- simple
- hardly ever a failure to fire (no jams, etc)
- limited number of rounds
- heavier trigger pull usually
- easy to clean/break down
Semi-Autos
- more complex
- is more likely to have a failure to fire, failure to eject, etc. (however, I've yet to have one in any of my Glocks. I have had a couple in a few Sigs due to it not racking properly)
- many more rounds in most models than a revolver
- less of a trigger pull compared to most revolvers
- much more complex to clean/break down

When I've taken these things into consideration, I've opted mainly for a semi-auto pistol. They are very reliable now-a-days and I don't mind the break down. I like the extra rounds carried, and if you get a polymer pistol, they are much lighter in weight.

However, it will always become a personal preference. Good luck in your decision.
