Restricted CCW Permit?

Newbie here just signed up to the site and this is my first post ...

I recently got my CCW permit with restriction (Work Purposes Only). I'm a small business owner and I dont punch a clock everyday I'm back and forth all day from jobs to my garage, home etc... I'm just looking for some feedback from you guys on how do I know when I'm carrying lawfully when I'm not? I might have a couple hours to kill between jobs and I could being doing a number of different things not necessarily related to work but I'm in my work cloths and in my truck. Am I breaking the law?
 
So your permit only allows you to carry when you are working? I've never heard of that. I'm reading this on my droid so I can't see what state you are in. so what state are you in?

Restricted CCW Permit

I'm from NY and I have a "restriced" permit as well. It's for Hunting & target/Camping/banking and employment (snowmobiling was also an option that I could have gotten, but didnt since I don't snowmobile). They are very strict on allowing "unrestricted" type licenses, usually you have to have your ccw for a number of years, own a business (preferrably) and take additional ccw courses.

I err on the side of being "safe" or should say "lawful", and don't carry for the fear of not falling into one of those situations listed above. Losing my gun rights is not an option. I'll just wait a little longer and take some courses and try again. Unfortunate we have to jump through hoops for our 2A rights!

Why would someone get a CC permit to only carry during work hours or for work? Did you check a wrong box on the application. You get a CC permit for personal protection while in public---at any time. If you live in a state that restricts your CC privileges consider moving
 
I am from NY and I have a CCW and no restrictions except I can`t carry in NYC. I haven`t heard of a restriction like this.

I'm from Rhode Island and yes I was given A permit with restrictions to Work Purposes Only... From what everyone is telling me work permits are pretty much the only permits the state is handing out these day. I find I'm carrying 99% of the time, the only time I don't is when going out for a beer or known restricted areas. It's just tough for me to draw a line between working and not. like I said I don't punch a clock so it's tough what am I supposed to do run home and drop off my firearm before I go to eat dinner at the end of the day?

I would think a work purposes permit would cover the way to work and the way home

The idea behind an "employment" restriction would be that you work in a high risk job and need additional protection while working. For example, one might carry large amounts of cash when making bank deposits. Or one might be a construction contractor working in high-crime neighborhoods. Or one might be a repo man.

(I don't agree with this kind of restriction. I'm just explaining it.)

If you work intermittently throughout the day, you're probably covered. And it's not going to be a problem anyway unless you have to use the firearm...or unless someone realizes you're carrying and calls the police on you. Considering the on-and off nature of your work, I'd consult ahead of time with an attorney, and keep the attorney's number easily accessible.

How about you check with the people who have the capability to put you in jail in your state? That would be a smarter course of action rather than provide insufficient information to people in internet forums who can't provide any information that will help you one bit if you do get busted.

Then you won't feel the need to get snotty about it when you and your question put you in a postition to be called a Troll. You would have noticed an apology from The_Outlaw if you were not a Troll if you didn't get so riled up.
 
Contact BC1 via private message for help on the restrictions. He is an expert on working with them in NY. He may be able to help you.

On a side note, why isn't nogods posting about the utopia the he constantly says NY is for gun laws???? :sigh:
 
I don't understand. Rhode Island is a "shall issue" State. Why would they only give you a CCW permit for work only?
 
I'm lucky enough to have an unrestricted permit in NY. NY has all sort of restrictions. From what I understand the 'employment' restriction in this state generally limits the permit holder to carry concealed:

1) In transit to and from place of employment.
2) In transit to and from the bank.
3) At ones place of employment and/or while performing duties affiliated to ones job.

I'm not sure about RI, but I would guess it is similar. Don't do anything without looking up the statute.
 
Were the parameters of your permit not spelled out to you when you took possession of it?
Some states include a booklet providing guidelines, some refer you to a special page on their state website.
Still others merely expect you to know the law.
If the nature of your work/business ownership can be liberally translated, and as you say you don't carry when out for a drink or in restricted places, it seems that you should be OK carrying "99% of the time".
But that is a non attorney opinion.
OTOH, different municipalities may look at your right differently, that is, if you were ever in a situation where your carrying was outed, so to speak, the authorities in Providence may look at the situation much differently than say Warwick or East Greenwich, etc.
CYA and one way or another, learn the RI laws and their subtleties. Maybe contact a good local RI 2A attorney for some advice regarding this. After all, they do this for a living. And it may be incredibly cheap for you in the long run.
