Remington 870 project

OK. I posted in an earlier post that I recieved a Remington 870 Magnum 20 gauge in a trade for some golf clubs. I have no need for another regular shotgun, and want to change it into a tactical shotgun. I want to change the stock, get a shorted barrell with a front sight, a forward grip with a light. I have not done much work with showguns, and would like any suggestions, especially where I can find the stock for the 20 gauge. I can find tons for 12g but not 20g. Thanks in advance for the info.

chiroman; most of the accesories for a 12 gauge will fit the 20, as they both use the same platform, i have a blackhawk modstock recoil reducing m4 style stock on my 870, cuts recoil approx 75 percent. also use one on my mossburg 20 ga. as for the forend, i used a mako fore end with a tactical light built in, that i got from cheaper than dirt. cant remember the brand, but it was approx $140.00 dollars, and has a built in light, & green laser combo that works very well. hope this helps. larry

Just spoke to a gentleman who informed me that some 20 gauge's use a full size frame and some don't. Depending on the serial numbers. Doesn't appear mine is a full size frame do the 12g stuff won't fit.

First off the 870 is a GREAT defense shotgun choice. Fro those who tell you the 20 is not adequate go get a copy of Massad Ayoob's shotgun defense vid. Next those that say a semi is better also should look to history and see the 870 is almost foolproof and works with any range of ammo in any order. Semi's can have issues feeding different ammo one after the other. So you build your 870 in 20ga and know it is a great choice.

Sportsman's Guide, Cheaper Than Dirt, Midway USA, internet searches etc should net you enough ideas of products and designs. You can saw a barrel down to 18.5" I believe so no need to buy a shortened one. Put a picatinny rail on top then mount a small red dot holographic optic and forget the front sight. How about a Hogue tamer pistol grip for it? A Mako or Magpul Forend and a Tacstar side saddle for extra rounds.

I have 2 Remmy 870's (12 gauge and a 20 gauge). The 20 gauge is a great upland game gun but looks like someone got the 12 gauge model wet and left it in the clothes dryer too long and it shrank. There is a very noticeable size difference. It is about a pound lighter than the 12 gauge model so a day in the field isn't as taxing. Due to the size difference and Americans lust for larger calibers there are tons of accessories for the 12 gauge model but not as many for the 20 gauge model. I would get the shorter barrel (around 20" ) and leave the rest alone. Get some bird shot and you got a great home defense gun. If you want tactical get the 12 gauge model. But that's just my opinion.
