Back in February, some DHS folks taught the State Police "Gun Squad" how to data mine Prescription records and scrub search against the states gun owner registry. They got a hit and confiscated the guys guns by revoking his Permit to Carry, (which in NY is a permit to simply own)

There is a big difference between a fellow citizen grabbing direct tv than a LE Arm of the Government listening. Verizon Vios is now using Fiber optic and does not have to share with cable which run on copper wire. Ma Bell also runs on Copper wire. Cops can not listen to Ma Bell without a warrant.
Your cell phone, not so much.
