REM 870 or Mossburg 500

Used to shoot trap/skeet years ago using an O/U. Wife and I would like to get back into the sport but would also like something for home protection as well. Wife is 5'2" and has never shot a shotgun. Perfer a pump so an 870 or Mossburg pump would seem to fit our needs. Any inputs and or reccommendations? I'm trying to keep the price under $ 600.00. Remmington 870 combo at $ 499.00 seems to fit the bill but not sure what else is out there. GOT INPUT?

I have loved the 870 for years. I have 6 of them. One for hunting, the one I carried with my on patrol when I was a police officer and four that I have built from receivers for defense guns you can see some here. You can't go wrong with the 870 as a pump gun for a decent price. I've never had one fail me and they are easy to clean, maintain and outfit with after market goodies.

I would agree. I have 3 870's and have never had even the slightest problem. 1 of them is 38years old and still works like the day it came out of the box.

FACTS..........
1. The Remington® 870 has a one year warranty; the Mossberg® 500 has a 10 year warranty.
2. Remington® 870 comes with one choke tube (MOD); the Mossberg® 500 comes with three choke (IMP, MOD, & FULL) tubes.
3. Only Remington® Chokes work in Remington® guns.
4. Mossberg® shotguns accept the following (within gauge) chokes.....
• Mossberg® Accu Choke™
• Browning® Invector™ (not Invector™ Plus)
• H&R/NEF®
• Ithaca®
• Savage®
• SKB
• Valmet®
• Weatherby®
• Winchester® Winchoke™
5. The Mossberg® 500 has an ambidextrous top tang safety, the Remington® 870 does not.
6. The Mossberg® 500 comes with sling & swivels; the Remington® 870 does not.
7. The Mossberg® costs $50-$100 less than the Remington® 870.

MY CONCLUSION.....

ADVANTAGE MOSSBERG®

I also have a bias towards the mossberg. I picked up a used 500 regal model, it has a gold color trigger and a fancier looking stock, but nothing special. I bought it for $300 it came with a 28" trap and a 24" slug barrel and it came with 6 chokes and a sling. It was a pretty good used deal. It has NEVER given me even a hint of an issue. It goes bang every time I pull the trigger. It is my go to sporting gun as well. I cant say enough good things about it.

I have 3 Mossys. My first one was 35 years ago. Never any issues with any of them except a broken front sight (my fault).

My 500's just like my Jeep, beat the hell out of it & it keeps on working, 100's of rounds of birdshot / slugs through it & it's never failed to go bang when I pulled the trigger.

Thanks all, really appreciate the great input. Still am not sure as yet but am kind of leaning towards the Mossberg’s. Think the price will probably make the difference. Thanks again

I put together a Mossberg 500 for my wife. I added a Blackhawk! Spec Ops 2 butt stock and a forend light. The stock greatly reduces felt recoil and has an adjustable length. Set your light output to the 00 buckshot spread pattern and your all set.
She loves it.

I bought a Mossberg 500P a while back, just a cheap one for home defense, haven't even fired it. It has as a heat shield...banned in Acevedo's new amendment heh. I really like the safeties on Mossbergs, you don't have to reposition your hand to toggle the safety, which could save your life in some situations. Since I've never fired it (and it's specifically designed for home defense), I can't really comment on 500s vs. 870s but I have a lot of friends who own 870s and they love them. I'd say go to an LGS and handle both of them, see which one is a better fit. You can always customize (Magpul makes stuff for 870s).

I was at the LGS today looking and going back and forth and the guy subject that don't get to hang up on which one because they both are good shotgun. I am leaning more to the Mossbreg 500 because I like the where the safety at and the price is less but when I go to get one which is going to be my birthday I will decide then next month when I go.

They're pretty damn even. Personally I think 500s are a little more utilitarian and 870s have the better fit and finish. 500s have a few extra redundancy features. The one thing I hate about the 500 is the safety location since most of my shotguns have pistol grips.

Oh I see so it's all depend on one preference and a little more money, I was on base and see that they were selling a Remington 870 Tactical Exprss which look sick but I don't want to pay $740.00 for it.

For an extraordinarily reliable and fun to shoot pump you can't really beat the price point of a 500.

Yeah I agree since this is just going to be my HD shotgun they have some at the LGS for $309.00 but it's only a 5 shots shotgun so can I upgrade the mag for more?

I bought a 3 round extension tube for my 870 from Brownells for less than $30. Would bet they have them for the 500 also
