registering a handgun

An acquaintance inherited a handgun many years ago from a deceased relative. The deceased relative lived in another state and she doesn't know if the gun was ever regiestered, but it has been in the family so long that she doubts this. In a recent discussion she learned that it is a felony to possess an unregistered handgun (she lives in MI). The gun is a keepsake and she also feels it may be advantageous to keep as an in-home self-defense device. She would prefer to "be legal", but is concerned that she may get in trouble or at the very least lose possession of the gun if she contacts law enjforcement. Any suggestions or advice from forum members?

Legalities aside, be sure the gun in any shape to be used for defense without serious work.
