Received personal letter from Judge today requesting all police reports

All judges in New York State want to be a part of your past & future. This will be another form of challenge they wish to use as a deterent(In their minds) to either slow down or halt the process while people are being assaulted throughout this Liberal mess we call a state. I would have left this state 2 years ago but the wife would get 1/2 of everything I've earned over my lifetime. I'm Stuck on Stupid! Good luck with your goal!
Yes, we Southrons know that New York changed from a Middle Atlantic State to a Yankee dominated state somewhere between 1865 and 1920, the exact year can't be determined as far as I know.

This is why your CWP's are hard to get these days, still, I think New York is salvageable if, and only if, you take back your state from the Yankee puritan influence that moved in from Connecticut and Massachusetts over the years I listed above. Oh, and rid yourselves of the similar influence of Eastern Europeans too.

I know this is politics, but let's face it, restrictions upon our intrinsic right to be armed with any weapon are purely political.

My younger Brother lived in Manlius, New York (I don't know the county) and managed to get a Concealed Carry Permit. I know very little of what he had to go through in the process but, he got even smarter and moved to New Mexico. I was much easier for him there. I live in Colorado and also have the permit but, we are a "SHALL ISSUE" state.
As for pistol choices, forget the 9mm. IMHO it is a useless caliber. The only real pistol is the .45ACP. My personal CCW is Colt's Commander 80 Series which reminds me very much of the 1911A2 that I carried in the military years ago...42 of 50 in the "X-Ring" at 7 yards with the remaining 8 rounds in the 9 and 10 ring. BTW...Only 10 rounds per target so score keeping was easy...

Good luck Vette. The fact that the Judge was considering going thru this for you is a plus and it shows that he probably is fair. I had a Mary misdo a long time ago and haven't had a problem so far. I'm downstate near the Tappan Zee so I feel for you.
Wear a Suit if you have one to the meeting. Showing respect gets respect.

Right on, my plan all along

Meeting with the Judge tomorrow

I will know my fate tomorrow afternoon. I will post a YES or NO as to the CCW I'm trying to get. Hopefully all goes:pleasantry:

Just got back from the meeting with Judge

The meeting went very well and it was a pleasure to speak with the Judge. He actually had the police reports next to him that he requested from me (think he just wanted to see if I would come through with the reports also). I gave him another letter along with all reports requested. The Judge did not mention one word pertaining to the pistol permit. I was asked about my education and what degrees I received and he wrote them down. I did receive a Masters Degree. He thanked me and told me I will receive a letter from him. I can't say if it will be a YES or NO. I hope so, but if he declines giving me the CCW, can I appeal the decision?

P.S the Judge actually got off his seat and reached over his desk to shake my hand, maybe it was the suit:biggrin:. Actually, its all about respect. I walked into his room respectful as can be, the Judge has earned it!!

Update

5 weeks and still waiting, hopefully this is + news. Been 3 months from the beginning of application. Only time will tell:biggrin:

Received today

Just opened my envelope from the Sheriff's office and I did receive my target shooting/hunting permit. Still waiting on the Judge's decision on my CCW. It's been 5 weeks since I personally spoke with him. Judge told me I will receive a personal letter from him stating my approval/denial on the CCW. Is it normal to get the target/hunting permit 1st and wait on the CCW?? Thanks

Unless your county does things much differently than any other, you have already gotten all you are going to get. You have a concealed carry permit with administrative restrictions.

What reason did you give for wanting an unrestricted concealed carry permit?

Anyone know just what is the technical factor determining residency in NY?
The address provided in NY must be your primary residence. Some counties conduct a residency check to ensure you actually live at the address listed. They usually show up unannounced on a Saturday or evening and ask to see a drivers license. If you're expecting the residency check it's best not to have 20 cases of empty Buds stacked on the porch waiting for reccycle. It will go in the file.

Perhaps I can help.

Most people have incorrect info about NYS. Once you get your full CCW you'll have more freedom than in many "gun friendly" states. Yes, your experience is quite normal. We generally advise students to seek a permit for hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, target, competition and while carrying large sums of money. Wait about a year and request an amendment to upgrade to an unrestricted permit. During the interim take the class "NRA Personal Protection Outside The Home." This shows the judge that you are committed to education, responsibility and an understanding of the law. You can contact me directly and I'll provide sample letters to send your judge. We're also offering this class on 3/19 an 3/20 in Plattekill, NY. I have three seats remaining. There are four instructors on the line and we don't go home until every student is satisfied. We offer USA Carry posters/members the class for half price ($100). Another trick is to become an NRA certified pistol instructor and then request the CCW permit. There are too many locations and times when you may be carrying for class. Judges tend to lift restrictions for business owners as well. If you carry sums of money your judge will be more likely to ease up. In 12 years of teaching and thousands of students I've only seen one denial of a permit, and it was justified. Just about everyone I know has an unrestricted permit in the lower part of the state. I understand some upstate counties have unreasonable judges. Hopefully the recent supreme court cases will cure this.

For those who have a poor opinion of NY, you must understand that NY City is where the problem is. It's another country. Full of liberals with strong anti-gun sentiment. Lot's of foreigner from countries where guns are outlawed. Upstate is different. More regular folks and a lot of permits. The problem is that NYC has nearly 9 million people on a 12 X 4 mile island and they control the vote for the whole state. However, once one gets the permit there are very few issues. I've only seen a "no guns" sign once... on HSBC bank. We can carry in bars, restuarants, public transportation, in parks, malls, hospitals... pretty much anywhere. There are only two counties that require renewals, in the rest of the state your permit is good for life. There are no limits to the number of handguns you can own.

If anyone is having trouble getting a permit in NYS feel free to PM me. We specialize in those sticky situations.

Still wondering

Going back 2+ months ago I had my meeting with the Judge for the unrestricted permit. He told me that I would personally receive a letter from him stating his answer. I never did receive anything from him as of today. Several weeks ago I received a envelope directly from the Sheriffs with my restricted permit stapled with papers regarding my new permit. But, there was nothing from the Judge, no denial letter, nothing. Just confused on this whole process.............

Maybe I should just leave well enough alone???????

I would provide the judge everything he requests as quickly as possible. When you meet with him be humble and accept responsibility for your actions. In some cases it is a good idea to obtain a certificate of relief of civil disabilities. An attorney can get that for you without much cost. But I wouldn't sweat this as a reason for denial. I've had students get passed with multiple arrests for drugs, DUI, family court matters, prior protection orderes and even simple assault (charges dropped or ACD). At PPA we have an attorney on staff to handle the sticky cases but your county is little far for him to make appearances.

I sit back and laugh reading some of the responses. Everyone has this misconception about NYS. They're confusing the state with NYC. There is no great conspiracy in NY to keep people from getting a permit. I've had ONE student denied in 12 years of teaching - thousands of students and we're just 45 miles from NYC. Just one, and he was a felon who actually thought he could slip through the system. NY is a discretionary state and may not issue unrestricted carry permits until the licensing officer feels comfortable with the applicant. After all, he doesn't know you. I received a call from a student this week to thank me for guiding him to an unrestricted permit. He was a new applicant but before asking for an unrestricted permit he took several classes (basic pistol, PPOTH Basic). The judge was pleasantly surprised that he took the time to understand the sport and the laws. He was granted an unrestricted permit in Ulster County right from the start. The judge advised that he doesn't nromally do this but was pleased with this student's attention to safety and rule of law.

The permit process in NYS can be daunting. Not because of an anti-gun sentiment, in fact most upstate counties, bar a few, are pretty gun friendly. Upstate NY is mecca of huting for deer, bear, turkey and waterfowl. The upstate economies thrive on it. Many hunt with revolvers. Guns are present all around and during hunting season one can hear near continuous shooting from the wooded areas. The permit process can take from 3-9 months, depending on the county workload. In large counties like Orange their are only two people working in the permit department and they're swamped. However, in Orange County nearly 10% of the population has a CCW.

As a discretionary state, NY licensing officers like to see a period of good behavior with a firearm before lifting restrictions. This is a pain in the rear but can usually be accomplished. One must show the judge responsibility, attention to the rule of law, education in personal protection both inside and outside the home and sound principals of concealed carry. One obtains these credentials by taking appropriate NRA sanctioned classes or attending courses at a well known shooting academy.

Now NYC? Well, what can be said? 8.5 million people, mostly demcrat/liberal, comprising nearly 30% of the state population and consisting of numerous immigrants who vote liberal democrat. Anything for the promise of an entitlement or safety. It's very hard to beat the voting block in statewide elections, but thus far we've done pretty well. We have no laws against carrying in bars, restaurants, churches, local parks, cities other than NYC, state lands, public transportation, banks, etc. Only seen one anti gun sign in my life and that was at HSBC bank [I guess the robbers will use th drive up window ;-) ]. So all-in-all, considering the demographics of the voting population, we've faired pretty well thus far.

Several years ago a new family moved up from NYC. My neighbor was shooting on his property. The police were summoned to a call of a madman in the woods with a gun. When they arrived an realized who it was they all laughed it off. They had to explain to this hysterical woman that she's moved to gun country and to expect to hear shooting all around her. Her husband perked up and asked, "you mean I can have a handgun up here?" In NYC , the thinking is that gun = crime.

He was my next student. Today he and his wife both enjoy shooting sports and have joined the local fish an game club. She has become quite proficient with her Ruger mark IV.

Nothing feels better than watching the evolution of a convert.
