Reagan on Socialism - Through Socialized Medicine

It was too bad for Mr. Reagan that the American people overwhelming favored the imposition of what he labeled Socialism and too bad that 72% of their duly elected Senators and Representatives voted contrary to Mr. Reagan's wishes and too bad Mr. Reagan chose to stand on the wrong side of history on the question of federal health insurance for the elderly and for poor families.
However, we need to remember that Mr. Reagan eventually saw the light and converted to Socialism when he was President. He not only saved, but expanded, the American system of Social Insurance when he could have killed it. He also expanded income redistribution and became a staunch defender of what he once vilified as Socialized Medicine.

The people who oppose the type of socialism we have in the U. S. are the ones who want to destroy our country.
Socialism is one of the many things that makes us such a great nation. Americans love the American brand of Socialism.
Even the great Ronald Reagan saw the light, repented his economic sins and became a Socialist. As the Chief Magistrate of our Grand and Glorious Secular Socialist Democratic Republic, he signed bills in 1984 and 1986 which more than doubled the redistribution of income from the rich to the poor. He was also a staunch defender of the right to bear arms, which was a demand of the Socialists.

iceman, I can hardly believe that you're a fan of Michael Moore. :fie: If the Canadian medical system is so good, why have they been coming to the U. S. for their medical care, even when they have to pay out-of-pocket for said care? Are you aware that a Canadian can not pay for an MRI for themselves or a relative but can get one for a pet, if they can afford the out-of-pocket cost? What is wrong with this picture? Are you aware that the wait in the U.K. AND Canada, where socialized medicine has deep roots, for a patient to see a specialist can be 6 months to a year? Are you aware that in the U.K., if a patient has macular degeneration, they have to go blind in one eye before the government will pay for treatment to the remaining eye? Do we REALLY want that quality (?) of healthcare here? And this MYTH that the poor can't get medical care in this country is maddening. Hospitals, by law, have to accept charity patients and can not refuse anyone medical treatment. There are FREE medical clinics everywhere! IF there are some unfortunate folks who do not have access to medical care due to inability to pay, it is such a small percentage that it flies in the face of reason why our entire medical system should be overhauled for THEIR benefit, when 300 million U.S. citizens are currently being well cared for. :hang3:
If Michael Moore truly believes that the Cuban healthcare system is so great, why doesn't he put his actions where his mouth is and move there for a few years. I'd be willing to bet that he'd be singing a different tune after THAT experience!

When I opposed Medicare, there was another piece of legislation meeting the same problem before the Congress. I happened to favor the other piece of legislation and thought that it would be better for the senior citizens and provide better care than the one that was finally passed. I was not opposing the principle of providing care for them. I was opposing one piece of legislation versus another.

The "other piece of legislation" was even more socialistic than the "Forand Bill", which Reagan, in 1961, said was Socialism.

Mom, No, I am not a fan of MM. He is a left wing entertainer, and more anyoying then the right wing entertainers who are often quoted here. However, he has some very vaild points about heath care.
For very personal reasons, I am not going to offer much debate regarding your so called free medical care in the USA. I can assure if you if it was as great as you think it is, then someone near and dear to me would still be around. People here are falling though the cracks and suffering. Walk a mile in my shoes, and I can assure you will be singing a different tune.

I am truly sorry for your loss, iceman. The untimely death of a loved one is a horrible grief that no one should have to endure. However, wouldn't it be better to 'improve" the current healthcare system so that no one falls through the cracks rather than to overhaul the ENTIRE system and, in the process, mandating that every citizen must buy health insurance and declaring what coverage each person can or cannot have? Our freedoms are slowly being eroded...even our freedom to choose our own level of healthcare. :fie: Furthermore, as a "seasoned" citizen, I am very afraid of being told, some year in the future, that I have a "responsibility to die" because my declining health is a drag on the system and I'm no longer actively contributing to the general welfare. :hang3: When abortion was legalized, I remember saying, "I wonder when euthansia will be legalized?" It's not far away, Folks. And when it DOES become a reality, it won't just be the elderly whose lives will mean little...it will also be the handicapped (mentally and/or physically) and the mentally ill! WATCH OUT as this will eventually affect even you!

Even if I walked a mile in your shoes (and I do remember some comments you've made that suggested of your story), I'd like to think I was raised to be enough of an ADULT to not expect other taxpayers to start shouldering the responsibilities of my family or making decisions "for" me.

If the Canadian system is so bad why did a friend of mine, who resides in British Columbia, have to fly from Dallas to Vancouver to obtain immediate back surgery when he couldn't get it in the U. S?

Nope. He's wealthy and was willing to pay a premium for a good surgeon who could do the surgery immediately. We just couldn't find one in Dallas. So, we loaded him up on pain killers and I flew with him to Vancouver. We went straight to the hospital and the surgery was performed the next morning. It was a success and now he's as good as new.
