I try to go 2 times a month and I bring my Ruger sr9c and Hi point 995 ts carbine I try to bring 150 target rounds and 20 hollow point rounds. I'm a new shooter so I want to practice as much as possible. I don't really like the indoor range i go to but outdoor ranges are almost nonexistent. Do you think I'm wasting my time and ammo or is it good to get practice on how to grip the gun correctly and a good sight picture or should i just practice at home dry firing and drawing from my iwb holster would like to hear what other have done thanks

Practice is important, if you know how to do it. Training is important if you don't. While there is a benefit to just go to the range and shoot, it is even more of a benefit to participate in a training class from time to time. You don't know what you are doing wrong until an instructor tells you. You can practice for years the wrong technique, needlessly sending rounds down range and wasting money. Training (learning new things through instruction) and practice (practicing the new things you learned) should go hand in hand. Shooting is a perishable skill. You should practice often.

I try to go to the range as often as I can. That is sometimes every week and sometimes once a month. I usually bring my carry handguns (Glock 19, 26 and 20), my shotgun (Mossberg 930) and my rifle (DD M4v11lw). In total, I probably shoot around 500 rounds. I rarely shoot my (handgun) JHP or (rifle) BTHP self defense rounds. I typically spend 2-3 hours at an outdoor range.

I go to the range at least every other week and shoot 1 to 200 rounds, I can't afford much more ammo than that.

i live near an outdoor range that the police use during the week that's open to the rest of us on weekends. They're open March thru December. The first year I went almost every weekend, now when i can - maybe every other weekend or once a month if I'm busy with other things.

I also use full metal jacket at range and have hollow point for self defense - as far as target practice I don't notice much difference and hollow points are much more expensive.

For the indoor range, Hubby and I go about once a week. We shoot mostly our handguns there, sometimes shotgun or rifle. We prefer the outdoor range for long guns but we don't go there as often (it's a longer drive, and there are no facilities there).

With the handguns we vary the practice--two-handed, one-handed dominant, one-handed support, revolver and semi-auto.

I'm almost 65 and since I got Parkinson's Disease a few years ago I've lost a lot of strength, so I can only comfortably fire 50 rounds per session. Bleh!

I agree with bofh about the training. There's no point in practicing incorrect technique and then having to unlearn bad habits later.
