Questions on Pocket Guns and guiderod.com

Dela-where?
New name here, lurked for a long time. So, hello!

My first question is about guiderod.com. Has anyone here purchased a guide rod from this website? I am in the market to replace mine and I came across his website; they look great and I want to replace the plastic I currently have. I was just curious and decided to ask here before I send out my guide rod.

Also, I am very interested in a pocket gun for summer carry. My Px4 is a bit thick for me to CCW without printing using appendix carry with a size 34 waist, so I need to find a second handgun to either use just for summer or to completely replace what I have. I'm stuck with what I have for now so I have quite some time before I make my purchase, but it is always good to research ahead of time. I am unsure of what to even purchase as it seems no local gun shops carry any pocket-sized guns for me to fondle with the exception of the S&W Bodyguard. For reference I've been using the chart at mouseguns.com and decided on either 9mm or .380, and J-frame is definitely an option.

I appreciate your opinions to help nudge me in the right direction!

I owned a ruger lcp and didn't like the recoil . Expensive ammo . Hurt to shoot it . Also very small . I carry a taurus 85 ultralight perfect size for belt carry and sometimes pocket . Easy to shoot clean and oil . Will always go bang .

I had the Taurus 85 and LOVED IT!! Great gun and it did always go bang!

Mines a 85 ultralight in titanium ... I love it man awesome gun it's light and would be a man stopper I would hope lol

I have a px4 storm in the subcompact and Its definitely on the thicker side. I recommend a N8^2tactical holster for it (I have the original) as long as I'm not wearing a white T or baby blue color you can't see it in shorts or pants.

Other than that Lcp all the way. Reliability and concealbility at its finest

Welcome aboard! =-)

While I do somewhat agree with 'justxboxin' that the LCP has quite a bit of recoil, I absolutely love to carry it during the hot summer months.
While it's not as powerful nor as accurate as my Glock 27, the LCP more than makes up for it by comfortably disappearing into my pocket and I am confident that it will do it's job effectively up to around 25 feet away i.m.h.o.

Look at the M&P Shield and the S&W 642, friends don't let friends buy Taurus.

Now I can buy two of the revolvers I have for the same price as a new smith ... I haven't had a problem with mine hasn't fallen apart . It's only a carry gun anyway . Would I buy another before spending twice as much on a smith yes

The LCP left bruises on my hands the first time I fired it but I still love the size and range I also have the Micro Eagle from Magnum Research it was a lil more $ and harder to find but I love it!!

Doesn't change my opinion that Taurus is an inferior product. As to buying two Taurus for the price of a S&W I've got to call BULLSHlT........ Buds Gun shop (who has some of the lowest prices available) has the S&W 642 for $377 shipped and the comparable Taurus 850 for $366 shipped.

Both companies have lifetime warranties, however S&W has a stellar customer service reputation and Taurus has the worst customer service in the industry.

I don't agree with you SGB on the Taurus. I've had several models and still own the TCP and they have been great guns for the money.
On the other hand, the SD40ve I looked at, by S&W of course, fell apart in the gun shop as I was testing the trigger!
Just goes to show, you can get either a gem or a lemon from any company. My T85 was flawless and so is my TCP.

Just sayin..... Ya know?

The difference being if you have a problem with a S&W it'll be repaired and back to you usually in a week, with Taurus you'll come to understand a whole new level of frustration. Never understood why someone would buy a Brazilian copy of an American revolver to save $10.

Just sayin..... Ya know?

It's only a carry gun, well it's only your life you are betting on.I have a Taurus and use it for plinking. I carry a Walther PPS because i consider it a much better quality pistol.

I carry the LC9 most of the time. If clothing simply will not permit good concealment/comfort, I carry the LCP. Going back and forth between the two requires no conscious thought as to which you are carrying as they are virtually identical in feel and operation, especially after I removed the thumb safety on the LC9. It was redundant, and can be a literal pain in the side when carrying.

small guns

I know most readers don't even think about carrying the pocket gun I have carried for many years. as it is generally a close quarters weapon. It is a Raven p25 which the Shooters Bible says "is as close you can come to Barietta ? quality @ 1/5th Barietta cost. It is an effective weapon with the RIGHT ammo. I carry Glaziers which iare billed as a safety round because they penetrate not ricochet. as the package info says "provides instant & total incapacitation" & gives the knockdown of a 9mm @ 45 feet in .25 caliber. Warning! the gun shop owner said MOST Inexpensive guns cannot handle these loads.

I wouldn't order a gun online you can't see what your getting before you pay and get it . And at my lgs my 85 was 330$ before taxes, a smith that I saw and liked was almost 700$ there's a huge difference when money comes to play . The Taurus has went bang everytime , and when I show someone they think it is a smith . Called Taurus seeing how they were . 30 seconds I got someone they were helpful and nice . Overall I love this gun and unless it falls apart ( I highly doubt it's well made ) then I'll consider another carry weapon . If I have to use it to shoot someone the cops will take it anyway , so why carry a 1100$ kimber when you can get a gun for 300$

Are we done with the Smith vs Taurus flamewar? Guns are like wines. You order what works for you. You wanna drink a riesling with your steak? Go ahead. God bless America.

I don't think there's a soul here who hasn't agonized over the "perfect" CCW. It doesn't exist. Gun companies make new, shiny things every day. I've been carrying a Kel-Tec P3AT forever and a day. I always think of replacing it with one of the new mini-9s, but dang it. It's so small and so light, I can stick it in my pocket or an IWB holster and practically forget about it. As long as I don't put Tulammo in it, it always goes bang. I also have a Smith & Wesson 640-1 -- a heavy, all-steel .357, but with the right holster and the right pants I can forget about it, too. A micro-9 would only give me one more shot (a faster reload, yes) than the Smith and wouldn't be quite as pocketable as the P3AT, so I've resisted.

As you can see, I have two CCWs and a lot of the guys and gals here have more than that. Find what works for you. Revolvers are less prone to jams and you can use them up close. Get one in a .357 and you have a lot of stopping power, but can also shoot .38sp when you want to. Semiautos hold more rounds and you can carry a couple of reloads much easier. If I had to do it all over again, I might split the difference and get a Beretta Nano or a Shield, but I got what I got and I'm happy with it. Good luck!

I've had a Taurus PT 99 AF 9mm since 1985. Use it owb carry as well house weapon - have never had problem with it. Don't know abt their customer service 'cause have not had to call them.

I also have XD 9mm which I occassionally use for iwb carry. Thinking of giving that to my daughter when she gets her ccw permit. When I do I may buy Taurus 809b or 24/7again in 9 mm. These are abt the same size as PT 99.

I have a TCP that is my pocket/ankle BUG. The recoil on these small pistols sucks but I did not buy it to be fun to shoot. I have a friend whose TCP has DA issues, but he also used to put 100 rounds or so a week through it. I do not think these small guns are made for that amount of range time...just enough to maintain proficiency (one hand close range gun of last resort) and ensure proper function. Mine has been flawless for two years. His, having been repaired/replaced and now fired more sparingly, has as well.

Now that I will go along with, we have had several Taurus's ended up keeping two of the TCPs great little guns for ankle carry, but I would never volluntarly buy another Taurus, when we got a pair of 709s I wanted a couple of extra mags, nobody had any so we went to cust service, dealing with Taurus cust service was a very unplesent experiance, and I will never do it again
