question on domestic violence and applying for CC after charges dismissed

if there are any legal eagle attorneys out there I would like to know if i had a domestic violence charge which occurred 20 years ago ( in a different state other than where i reside now) and was dismissed in court 2017 in that state, and finding of not guilty, i want to apply for a CC in my state where i currently reside. if asked am i required to affirm that there was a charge but is now dismissed or reply no as it has been dismissed/not guilty. either way i know it will show up on higher level background checks that require finger printing but will reflect as dismissed. looking for the correct way to answer this question on the form.

Impossible to answer because you don't say what state you are applying in. If you are applying in a "may issue" state that requires the issuing authority to determine you are of "good moral character" to issue the license, then that issuing authority may very well use the charge of domestic violence to deny your license, regardless of the outcome of the charges. If you are applying in a state that is "shall issue" and requires a conviction to be denied, then you should be good to go - but be prepared to present all the legal documents that prove the charges were dismissed or you were found not guilty - which, BTW are two legally different outcomes.
