Question on Buying a Gun in IL

I lived in Grand Rapids, MI for four years while I was at college. While I was there I declared residency and said goodbye to our forsaken state....ANDDDDD I'm back. So my question is this...

I want to buy a pistol. I have gotten an Illinois DL now, and have my FOID card from when I lived here before. It hasn't expired or anything, so can I buy a firearm with my old FOID card? I have bought ammo with it as well as held guns in my LGS.

Let me know, I want a new gun.

I am not a lawyer. If your old foid card has not expired you should be good to go. However you should contact the state for a change of address (if necessary).

If you are not sure, why not run a FOID check on yourself using the new ISP FOID check system which is a requirement for private party sales as of Jan 1st 2014. Then you will know for 100% sure if your foid is still valid or not.

The difference between buying ammo or touchy-feely the goods at the counter is they don't run back ground checks for that. But do when you buy a firearm from a FFL.

Im going between a Sig 226 or a Springfield xdM 4.5 (maybe 5.25) if I can find it. It's gonna be a bedside gun, so carrying it on my hip isn't a necessity.

ETA, I own a XDM and have encouraged my accountant and sister in law to also buy XDM's and we all love them. Mine is the 5.25, theirs are the 4.5. My ONLY complaint is the trigger. It's great for a "Duty" gun, which is what I think you want in a bed side gun. However not so much for a competition firearm which is what mine is. You probably don't need the added sight radius of a 5.25 for a bed side gun so don't stress about it too much.


FWIW, not to start a huge debate or dissuade you but have you considered maybe a rifle or a shot gun for home defense?

I actually have a 590a1 12ga as well. This would be to compliment that, as well I am going to be buying an AR in the near future. I really love the XDM, my dad has the 4.5 and it fits so well. I have heard that trigger complaint befire, if worse comes to worse I will have it taken care of.

Thanks for the advise though. I really appreciate it. Also my FOID card is still active so I'm going to the gun shop tomorrow (or whenever this snowstorm stops).
