Hi guys and gals, I need some help please. As you may know Illinois is just now in the infancy stages of getting carry concealed setup. It's not yet setup, and there are some speed bumps. We at Illinois Carry are working with the Illinois State Police to smooth those speed bumps. As an IllinoisCarry soldier in the fight for 2A rights in IL I was tasked with: looking up "approved curriculum" in a few different states. These states are: WA, OR, ID, MT, NC, SC, WV.

I have checked various websites including usacarry handgunlaw and the various official state and sheriff websites trying to find training requirements. So finding the training requirements isn't really a problem at all. The reason question is: Do any of the states officially name and list approved curriculum?

For example in Illinois to get approved as an instructor one must submit an application NAMING their curriculum and swearing that this curriculum will be approved (or denied) and listed on the Illinois State Police website. Not all instructors need to submit a curriculum, for example I can buy/borrow a curriculum someone else already got approved. What we are now trying to find out is A) Does any other state do this naming and approving curriculum? and B) Does any other state publish this information? and C) Where can I get a list of the approved curriculum?

Does that make sense?

Either Illinois is the only state that does this or I am shooting blanks.

If for what ever reason you don't want to share this publicly, please feel free to email or Private message me.

... and while we are at it, if any other states that I wasn't tasked to search out do approve and list curriculum it would hurt to post or send me that information as well.

We here in Illinois would really appreciate it!

I have a Utah non-resident permit, and I know they have specific requirements for training... I'm a CO resident and they were required to send me home with a DVD full of Utah law, plus they had to teach Utah things before they did Colorado. The instructor kind of threw Colorado differences in with the Utah information, so I don't have anything specific, but you might try there...

Thanks for the reply. I am specifically looking for not just training requirements but courses being named and approved to meet those training guide lines. Thanks.

That's what I figured... it was just my guess that Utah might have courses out of any of the states I've got a permit for... Good luck!

WA does not require a class for a CPL. We just fill in our basic info, get our fingerprints done, pay our $52.50, and call it a day. We are a "shall" issue state, as long as nothing comes back negative they must issue the CPL in 30 days or less.

In South Carolina every candidate for a Concealed Weapons Instructor must submit a curriculum to the State Police. There is a pdf copy of the weapons laws on the State's website. Every instructor candidate must show how they will cover each aspects of the laws pertaining to the possession and carriage of weapons, the requirements to claim self defense as well as gun safety and the application process. They mark up your submission and you make the corrections and submit it for re-evaluation. The final version becomes your curriculum. All curriculums must cover the same general requirements but each instructor's version is supposed to be an original. I'm sure though, there are many that have been copied and submitted as original. Good Luck!

Does Carolina post this information on their website? DO they publish the curriculum or even publish the curriculum names?

No, they don't. Each instructor gets his original curriculum back and it is his forever. I suppose someone could send you a copy of theirs but since mine is 17 years old, you might like something a little more current.

WA - no training requirement

I will confirm what was stated earlier, Washington does not have approved curriculum because we have no training requirement.

I don't know whether this will help or not but Nebraska requires their instructor applicants to provide a certificate of completion from one of the following entities, with their application to be come a cc instructor: State of Nebraska Certified Firearms Instructor (Law enforcement only), Military Pistor Instructor, NRA Certified Pistor Instructor, or instructor in some other program meeting the same standards for instructor certification. A notarized copy of the certificate of completion from the certifying entity shall be submitted to the Nebraska State Patrol.(Our licensing agency)

This would seem to me to be a quick way of coming up with qualified instructors for a new program such as yours.

You may want to try contacting them-

I do know SLED recognizes the NRA course. So, perhaps you can begin with a copy of their's.
