Question about tasers...

So my wife is not a fan of handling guns. I've shown her how to use mine, she can use them if absolutely necessary at home, and she doesn't mind my owning them (thank God!), but has no desire to carry. So I asked her if she would like a taser to carry for defense, and she absolutely loved the idea. So my question is: Do you need any kind of concealed permit (we live in Washington State) for a taser? Does the taser being close range vs fire-able prongs make a difference in need for a permit? and any advise for purchasing a taser (especially on a budget)?

While I'm not up on the laws in Washington state (I live in PA), I have had the benefit of Taser training since I'm a Sheriff's Reserve. A Taser is a wonderful tool as long as only one BG is on the scene. If there are two or more, you are screwed being armed with only a Taser. The other problem with a Taser is even some of the police grade models can not penetrate a BG's clothing if it is winter time. This renders the Taser useless. The civilian models are even worse at penetration.

If it's a warm day and the perpetrator is wearing light clothes and the barbs do hit the perpetrator and are far enough apart on his body to be effective, yes they are good tools. If all of those things don't line up, it just won't work the way it should.

I personally do not carry a Taser on my duty belt. I prefer law enforcement grade Oleoresin Capsicum Spray (approximately 2 million scoville heat units). It can be used on multiple individuals and I don't have to worry about two barbs hitting the target and being far enough apart to work.

Fully agree with Wolf. Tasers are very unreliable. Also, you should check local law as to the legality of them in your area.

There is also a difference between a taser (electrical overload) and a stun gun (pain compliance), and how they affect the body. Research each one before you decide.

Ask her if she really trusts her life to a battery. Also ask her why she would want to close the distance and get up nice and close to a person trying to kill her so she could stun them...

But...don't most self defense incidents happen at that range anyways?

The common saying is that they take place within a few yards, which is different than the arms reach you need to use a stun gun.

Plus, I wouldnt rely on statistics to save my life. If most self defense incidents take place within 21 feet or so, that doesnt mean all self defense incidents do. You might just have a bad guy running at you from 25 yards away and a gun can solve that problem, a stun gun would require closing that distance which is an awful idea.

Why not give yourself the advantage of distance? You can use a gun at point blank or far away. Cant do that with a stun gun.

True when using stun gun. Tasers can shoot 35 feet though...tasers also usually incapacitate quickly compared to a stun gun or even a firearm (that doesn't hit the cns or heart).

Like others have said, the downside is penetration against thick clothing and single shot, but I suppose limiting yourself to 35 feet is still a negative...

Im not exactly sure why you're seemingly debating whether or not a taser is more effective than a firearm at stopping a bad guy because Im pretty sure you chose to carry a firearm rather than a taser.

I would much rather have a gun than a taser.

For the benefit of the OP. He set the parameters for this thread to be about tasers not firearms.

Maybe we can get him to realize this is a firearm forum he is posting in.

Forum: Concealed Carry Discussion
Anything to do with legally carrying a concealed firearm, permits, laws, etc.

Yes. Maybe he didn't know about the less than lethal sub forum...or maybe he is on the phone. It doesn't say which sub forum we are in on the android application....

Maybe Luke can add the sub forum near the "published at" and the like feature to the android app.

Ya that's a good idea. But I usually just select "Request desktop site" on my phone because I like the regular full view on this website.

The only state law against carrying/concealing a taser is RCW 9.41.280, illegal to carry on school grounds. However, only firearms are covered under state preemption laws, so that means any county or city can have their own ordinances against carrying tasers. I don't know if any do.

Handgunlaw.us says that Bellingham and Ruston have ordinances against tasers.

Thank you to everyone regarding the responses! I do apologize for posting this in the wrong place, I didn't see the non-gun forum before, plus my initial question was regarding concealment of a taser so I thought it would fit here. I appreciate the insight into the taser vs. handgun debate. In a perfect world, I could get her a little purse carry and life would be good. But she literally hates using a gun. I've trained her on my home defense pistol, and she could use it if necessary but she refuses the idea of carrying it with her. When I asked her about a taser for Christmas, she was all over it. And so my debate turned to Taser vs. nothing (actually, she had been carrying bear-pepper spray, until it broke and she tried to fix it and ended up with a bit in her eyes). I see some good advise for shopping for one and really appreciate NavyLCDR for coming through on the concealment part

One thing to consider is that the first thing any criminal with two functioning brain cells is going to do when attacking a woman is to seperate her from her purse.
