Putnam County Processing?

Hi All,
Quick questions for anyone who knows how Putnam County Pistol Permit process works? I am waiting on my pistol permit so I can start a job in armed security. I know my application has been sent to the judge or clerks office but just not sure how this works? Since its at the clerks office it should be any day now?Do I get a call or is it sent in the mail? What happens with the first handgun purchase? Thanks for any feed back!

I do not live in Putnam, But I live in Erie County where the Application process is close to the same.

#1-Once your permit is Approved by the Judge, You will receive your approval letter from your county clerks office.

#2-Once you receive your letter, you can go purchase your weapon.

#3-Once that is done you take your purchase receipt back to the Pistol Permit Office.

#4- the pistol permit office adds your weapon to your permit, and they will give you a coupon, that you take back to where you purchased your Weapon.

#5- from here the dealer gives you, your weapon, and then you are good to go.

Thanks for your reply. Just learned that the county clerk will notify myself by phone when approved and all paperwork is completed before I can personally come in to pick up my

(hopefully) Un-Restricted CCW permit. I already have my firearm purchase receipt ready so when I get the call I'm hoping I will get the coupon to pick up my firearm from the dealer

that day?
 
I called two weeks ago Tuesday to check. I only submitted early feb. so just wanted to check all references responded. I was told its up with mental health check and they are waiting for other applicants checks as well.

Thats what I heard also. Any word on status yet? Or can some one who recently received a permit in Putnam let us know how you did?
 
:) Received phone call to come pick up my license but was on vacation. Picked it up and now waiting on coupon to pick up my firearm! How long is the amendment take?
 
also congrats now since u got the hunting and target make sure u send ur application to upgrade to full carry it will take a year but u will get it
 
I guess I have a little longer wait.only been 3 months since fingerprinted. not bad though considering some other counties wait times.

Good idea to take a concealed carry class before requesting the upgrade. In Orange the amendment takes about a month, not a year.
 
Just picked up my permit. Very smooth,fast just about 3 months. Everyone I spoke with was very pleasant. Now to decide,kahr cm9,ruger lc9 or s and w bodyguard 380. Stopped at ffl to look,only had 2 to look at..

Once you send your letter to the Sheriff's office to request a hearing to upgrade your permit, you should get scheduled for a hearing within 6 months. It varies, but it's definitely less than a year.

Regarding Putnam County Fish & Game, I am a member, and I recently inquired about the current membership backlog, as I have had a couple of my students apply, and still have not heard back. Here's the scoop:

When you send in your letter requesting membership, you go on a list in the order your letter was received. About 4 times a year, the first 30-40 people on the list are contacted to come in for a new member orientation.
The current membership waiting list is about 200 people. So, you will get contacted, just be patient. It's definitely worth the wait.
 
Oh, and amendments in Putnam are generally done within a week. Judge Reitz usually signs them every Wednesday or Thursday.

Last week I dropped off my amendment application on Tuesday morning for a used 686 I bought. Had my amended permit and coupon on Friday.

If getting in is diffcult or expensive try Bethlehem Rod and Gun Club.

Membership is $120 per year which includes trap range, skeet range, 100 yd rifle range, 50 yd pistol range, heated range house, personaql protection training, experienced training staff and RSO's, large stocked lake, campground, pheasant preserve and about 900 acres for deer/bear hunting. Located in Plattekill NY, just over the Newburgh town line. New members are admitted in the third week of June. Check the club calendar and website for more info.
 
Membership fees at PCF&GA are $125/year. Totals fees when you join are (if I remember correctly) $435. You are required to put in 8 hours work time in your first year, then 4 hours/year after that. After the first year, you may also buy out of your work hours at $25/hour.

Bethlehem sounds like a great deal too - but it's quite a hike from over here. But at $120/year, I may join anyway. :)
