Purchasing handgun in SC as a new resident

Does SC require that new residents must live in state at least 90 days before they are allowed to purchase a handgun? I can't seem to find anything like that in the books, but when I stopped in at Academy a week or two ago, they said that 90 days must have passed from the issue date on my driver's license before they can legally sell a handgun to me. Can anyone verify that?

Thanks!

If you have your driver's licence in SC then you should be able to purchase a firearm right now. This is your proof of residency in SC if you are an US Citizen.
If I remember well the 90-day period applies only to immigrant aliens.

As a matter of fact I have a friend who moved to SC just 3 months ago and he already purchased a handgun. So it shouldn't be an issue for you either. Maybe ask in a gun shop instead and they will assist you with that.
And thank you for join us in South Carolina, I'm sure you'll love it! ;)

Great! Thank you for the reply. And it's good to be here. Gonna miss the open carry laws of NC, but I think I'll survive. :-)

The 90 days was the period a resident alien had to provide proof of residence for in order to buy a firearm until January of 2012. Someone in the Department of Injustice pulled their head out of their hind quarters and realized that wasn't kosher. That restriction no longer applies. The DOJ got it right for once.

Section 922(b)(3) of title 18, which forbids federal firearms licensees from selling or delivering
“any firearm to any person who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe does not reside
in . . . the State in which the licensee’s place of business is located,” cannot be interpreted to define
“reside in . . . the State” differently for citizens and aliens.
