Problem with brand new Savage

I bought a new bolt action Savage rifle chambered in .308win about 3 weeks ago. Just got back from the range where I had my first chance to fire it and it just misfired. No primer strike at all on Hornady factory rounds. Of course I brought it back to the store which is sending it back to Savage for repair. Does anyone know how long of a turn around this will be? Store personnel had no clue. Maybe I should have just taken it to a local gunsmith???

Thanks

I'm sorry you are having problems with your new firearm. That is never an easy thing to swallow.

Have you tried calling Savage yourself? Usually when you send something back to the manufacturer, they give you contact info to keep track of what is happening.

Depending on what's wrong with it, will determine the turn-around time.

Does your savage have the accu-trigger?

If so the problem is not with the firearm, it's with the user. Not that you don't know how to shoot, just the trigger is so light that a mere brush on the side drops the hammer. If the accu-trigger safety is not disengaged it will not fire and no strike on the primer. I found being more cognizant of my trigger finger position solves the problem. Just be sure to flush the trigger and press the safety sear first.

Btw. Sending the Bolt home hard activates the trigger on my 10FP.... They are just really really really light and you can adjust them lighter.

^^what he said^^

Make sure you are using the accu-trigger properly and not accidentally setting it off before the trigger safety is fully disengaged.

It could also be the firing pin assembly. The firing pin assembly in my savage 11 in .243 has an adjustment for how far the firing pin protrudes through the bolt face. When I bought the firearm, I realized the bolt had an EXTREMELY stiff lift that would wear out your shoulder after about 10 shots. Took the bolt apart and realized the firing pin spring is about twice as long as it needs to be and under a ton of tension causing the stiff bolt lift. I cut the spring down to reduce the tension and after a few light primer strikes and a couple adjustments to the firing pin protrusion, it now shoots like a dream.

I sent back a shotgun (Stevens 320) and Savage sent back an upgraded model in 3 weeks. Hard to tell though, I've seen people saying up to 6 months on other forums.

I don't think this is the issue. There is a very distinct click when the trigger is pulled but gun misfires and there is no dent on the primer where the firing pin should be hitting.

I believe this is closer to the problem although the bolt is not stiff at all. I am no gunsmith so taking the bolt apart is not something I should be attempting. I don't have the right tools anyway.

You'll hear a click that is the hammer falling and hitting on the safety sear. What model is the gun?

It is 10/110 LE 24" heavy bbl. It doesn't have a "hammer" it has a striker but I guess you know that. I am going back to the store to get the rifle back though. I think there is enough indication that the problem can be remedied at my level.

Thanks for all the responses.

Sorry about that post from American.heart. She is my wife and we both use the same autologger. I accidentally logged in with her username. She is a new member and I just didn't pay attention when I clicked on USACARRY!

Anyway, it appears as though you were right. I retrieved my rifle from the store and tweaked the accutrigger up a notch. Now it will not click unless the trigger safety is depressed all the way. I did some experimenting and the striker is hitting the primer now. I will do some dynamic testing next week at the range. Thanks much for the advice. I would have wasted weeks by sending back a perfectly good rifle. I have owned other accutrigger Savages in the past and never experienced this problem. I never had to mess with the adjustment because they always felt just fine. I guess this one was just set down too low at the factory.

Thanks again for this very important info.
