A lot of good points are made both in the article and by some comments below it. Bottom line, personal responsibility has always been and
always will be the best solution to most problems. Nothing wrong with being as prepared as possible for as many scenarios as possible, within reason. No one can prepare for every contingency, but being prepared for even some things will put you way ahead of the rest of the crowd.
Better safe than sorry.
