No such thing. Pre-ban only applies to imported assault rifles. The "ban" refers to the import ban of 1989.

Nope. With all due respect, the ban that's referred to by the phrases "pre-ban" and "post-ban" is the federally mandated import ban of 1989 that's still in effect. It doesn't apply to American-made assault rifles nor has it ever. Now, state or local governments may have their own laws concerning assault rifles but they don't differentiate between foreign and domestic guns. Only the fed does that and it only applies to foreign assault rifles. As a result you can easily pay 4 or 5 times for a pre-ban AK (or H&K, or FN, etc.) than you would for one that's been made to comply with the ban.

If anyone tries to tell you that an AR is more valuable or different in any way because it's "pre-ban", tell them they're full of bull manure.

I was just about to say the same thing. Liberals call them "assault rifles". I dont know about you, but my Bushmaster is an M4, not an "assault rifle". Or call it a carbine, rifle, whatever, just not "assault rifle".

It's what the law says that ultimately matters. In most cases, the law defines an assault rifle as a semi-auto or full-auto rifle with a magazine capacity of more than 10 rounds and a pistol-grip. It's all about military vs non-military. Some other things may apply as well such as bayonet lugs, flash supressors/muzzle brakes, etc. all of which are considered "military" with no civilian or sporting uses.

The Chinese AK manufacturer Norinco did it right - they responded to the ban by changing the stocks on their AKs that're imported to the U.S. as well as not including any hi-cap mags. Presto - the AK-47 is now considered a sporting rifle by ATF and is perfectly legal to import. Their American owners are are now free to install traditional AK stocks & pistol grips as well as use 30rnd mags. The pic below is of one such factory-modified AK and is not considered to be an assault rifle in the eyes of the fed.
