I read somewhere that I can practice at a range with out having a permit yet. Is this allowed in nys? My husband is telling me not in nys. Anyone have an input.
Thanks

Ummm... 'GUN Safety' is practiced 24/7 365 everywhere you go... The question should be can you transport your firearm to and from the range without a permit... Your states laws should tell you these things... Or Call the range safety officer...

"It is unlawful for any person to carry, possess or transport a handgun in or through the state unless he has a valid New York license."

The key word being POSSESS.

At the risk of feeding another possibe troll...(if you are not a troll I apologize)...
My advice?
If you value your 2nd Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms, then you need to move the hell out of that fascist state.

Look at his name also.

Ok so my extreme apologies for improperly wording this. No I am not a troll as funny as my post is worded. What my question is, can I practice to shoot at a range in NYS? Is it allowed in any other state ie; PA, CT. I am aware that "safety" is in regards to the handling/carry of the weapon. My husband would be embarrassed Lmao. I currently am in the process of trying to get my permit and have not handled a handgun yet. My husband already owns several handguns and is an avid hunter but I want to legally go shoot before obtaining the permit Thanks.

Oh and the name is in regards to the handgun I have on hold pending my application for permit. S&W Bodyguard. I am also aware it stands for "bad guy". Lol

Haha well honestly all I know about ny is I lived there for about eight months . Terrible it's not fun there , and everything is ten times more then it costs anywhere else . My advice on your situation , it sounds like you want to shoot but even need a permit to leave the house with the gun. I'd move lol

Some of the instructors of the Pistol Safety Class use Replica Guns or even Air Soft models to facilitate safe handling and shooting basics.
The Catch 22 of not being allowed to touch / "possess" a handgun without a valid license may be looked on by some as a small mistake by the drafters of the legislation.
I believe they were being dumb like a fox and knew exactly what they were doing.

I too am waiting for my permit in nys.

You cannot legally handle a handgun in the state without a permit.

With that said, i have found many friends are willing to take me to their land or gun club to shoot their handguns. I hear the range is lenient too but they will not rent to someone without a permit.

I have taught the Pistol Safety course in Albany county for many years, and now live in Florida. Although an NRA instructor, I am not a lawyer. To my knowledge, until you get that permit, you may not legally even touch a pistol, let alone fire one on a range.

Almost sounds like you can't rent a gun without a permit

If the range has guns to rent and you use one, it sounds like you'd be in violation because you "possess" it while you are shooting.

You can rent handguns in the state of PA with just a drivers license. In CT, you can rent a handgun if you have a recent Basic NRA cert. or have a CCW from another state like Florida.

This is great news. Thanks all I am off to find a range near me.

Thank goodness I own my own land and myself wife and daughter have a place to shoot. My wife is getting set to go get her cc license.

I was at the range today (Coyne/Yonkers,NY) when I overheard a instructor on the phone say " if you do not have a pistol permit in NY you can't rent a handgun but you may rent a rifle"
Hope this helps
