Polk County Iowa CCW Permit

Hello,

Anyone know what the average turnaround time has been for the Polk County Sherrif's Office (Iowa) to issue new CCW permits? I submitted my application on February 14th and haven't heard anything back.

Thanks for your help!

They have 30 days to say yes or no, & if they say no they have to give you a valid reason for the denial such as a felony on your record.

More than likely if the local sherriff is not happy with the new law you will be waiting the full 30 days. At least that is what has been the norm in the county I live in. Sheriff doesn't like the law and everyone I know has had to wait the full 30 days.

It can be fast, but some Sheriffs don't like having their "power" challenged.

§724.11, WEAPONS

4. The sheriff or commissioner of public safety shall approve or deny an initial or renewal

application submitted under this section within thirty days of receipt of the application. A

person whose application for a permit under this chapter is denied may seek review of the

denial under section 724.21A. The failure to approve or deny an initial or renewal application

shall result in a decision of approval

The Sheriff has 30 days to make a decision. If a decision isn't made in 30 days, approval is assumed automatically.

It does depend entirely on the Sheriff. I had my written form WP2 in my hand 15 minutes after I walked in the door with the proper paperwork. I had to wait 30 minutes more for my WP9 wallet card because they were in the process of setting up the computer/camera. The staff didn't like the first try. I turned down the second try. The Sheriff turned down the third try. On the fourth attempt we finally got a picture everyone thought was acceptable. 45 minutes total time that could have been 15 to 20.

When I applied for my permit at Polk county I was told it would be 30days and that is what it was within a day or two

Mine was 29 days, I think. I am thinking that we need a new sheriff in town. Along with a new co attorney. Will let you know how long my wife's takes. She applied last Monday.

Hello,

I applied for mine last year and had it in my hands within three days. Could be something in your background check?

No, I think it is Polk County. 27 days, and my wife's has not arrived. She doesn't even have a traffic ticket on her record.

As I stated earlier, I applied for mine on 2/14. The issue date on the permit is 3/14 and I received it in the mail on 3/14. It appears as though they are waiting for the entire 30 days.

From what I was told, Polk County Officials were against "Shall Issue". Basically, they make you wait as close to the maximum amount of time they can allowed by law. Pretty much a sour grapes situation. Not sure how much of this is fact. Again, just what I have heard here locally.

My wife recieved hers today. 30 days on the nose. I think the sheriff has slots for each date, with instructions to mail them one or two days prior to the 30 day limit. SR40c seems to be correct. Sour grapes.

I received mine in the mail exactly 30 days after I applied. I talked to a deputy who is running against the current sheriff. He said he is for constitutional carry and would like to see that passed in Iowa. I told him I would be happy to vote for him because he is for citizens carrying and I thought they were purposely holding up the permits for the full 30 days. He said it was because they were that backed up and were having trouble even getting them out in 30 days because they only have 2 people working on permits. He said if elected he would like to expand the number of people processing permits so they could have a better turn around time.
