"CLEVELAND (AP) — A chase that ended with 13 officers firing 137 rounds, killing two people, began with a pop — perhaps a gunshot or backfire from a car speeding past police headquarters....

As the chase ended along hillside driveways heading to the school in John D. Rockefeller's old neighborhood, Russell allegedly rammed a patrol car and drove toward an officer on foot. Then the gunfire erupted: 137 rounds, Russell shot 23 times and Williams 24 times and their car pockmarked....

While the driver may have endangered officers, Klinger questioned why the passenger was shot two dozen times, though he wondered whether officers missed while aiming at the driver.

Follmer said some officers in the chase believed both the driver and passenger were armed, and police radio chatter had numerous references warning about a weapon or gunfire from the fleeing car.

"I guess he's waving a gun out the window pointing at the officers," one radio dispatch said.

But no weapon or shell casings were found in the fleeing car and the chase route was searched for any trace."

Going to be interesting to see how this one plays out!

Although 137 shots IS excessive considering the situation (if the details are factual) i believe that the cops will be cleared of any wrongdoing in this life. Not so sure of the afterlife.

137 shots are not excessive considering 13 officers were firing semi autos holding over 10 rounds each.

All BS aside. Did it take that many rounds to stop the threat? If it took that many than so be it. If you dont want to get shot by the police its pretty easy.

Yup, ALL BS ASIDE, like "special training" and practice, practice, practice. I'm sure they had to receive "Crisis Counseling" too. :cray:

How well can u see through shattered glass??? Not to mention, it doesn't take more than a few seconds for 13 officers to empty a mag.....excessive is not stopping for the police in the first place!!

Just lost a Bellaire Police officer Christmas Eve as well as innocent bystander BG in recovery. Started with a chase.

They always are, even when their guilt is obvious.

Compare your statement to this:

Next time I order a police officer to the curb for violating traffic law, excessive will be not stopping for the armed citizen, who also employs him.

How is it any different? Control your emotions please.

When on patrol on Haifa, when a threat was engaged, we had specific rules of engagement. That meshed into the way our squad worked. For two terrorists fleeing in a car, it would be considered excessive to flee if they did not stop when ordered to by the United States Army, correct? IF ALL 4 (or 5, oh hell lets just make it a 9 man team)OF US EMPTIED OUR MAGAZINES, (taking into account the officers likely had the same model glock, I'm assuming m4a1 for us all) we could do it in less time and completely liquify the tango. Why didn't we?

Hmmmmmm....let's see...first of all, it only takes one or two men to accomplish that. Secondly, it's wrong to waste that much taxpayer money just to accomplish overkill. (Add in this situation and court fees, attorneys, etc.) Third, the media would have a party in our honor and probably manage to turn our country against us (like in Vietnam...its not so hard when then president Bush was an idiot and the current president hates us). And lastly, there could have been other threats to the squad. If I had rolled out of that car with even a single action 6 shooter, I could have delt an infinate amount of damage to those 13 officers. I bet they stayed on the X too. This whole thing stinks from the bottom up. It also stinks of poor training and discipline up their chain of command.

If you'd like to add in another why not, if the officer has a chance to take them alive by disabling the vehicle to preserve life, then they should do so. IDGAF what any book says. You cops are not at war, so stop acting like it. FWIW, Crips think that THEY are at war. There's not much of a difference when you kill people for not stopping. Especially when it's out of anger.

My question is " If there were no firearms or shell casings found on the suspects of the vehicle then why did the 13 officers decide to shoot ? " I understand that an officer was endangered by the driver and the vehicle but to have 13 officers fire 137 rounds and no firearm found raises my red flag more than just a bit. As per usual they will all be put on adminstration duty till the investiagtion is completed. We will have to wait for the final results of the investigation.
