Pocket rocket winter?

Well, last winter was nothing to brag about in Wisconsin. We had conceal carry law go into effect January 1, 2012. Not a single millimeter of snow for us at that time... this morning, I woke up to my kid screaming, "Daddy! Daddy! Daddy! Daddy! Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!" Literally. After about 5 minutes she finally said, "it snowed!" So we ate granola bars and went outside...which presented me with a new dilemma. I, uh....open carried for a few years and stopped in winter. (I still OC primarily, but winter weather will not touch anything but my deer rifle...) Unless I could get away with just a hoodie. Now that it's here, how do I go about it? This will take some getting used to. I think it's time for a new jacket. Mine are a little too "gangsta," which I will blame on my disadvantaged foster care raised childhood.

I have a nice thick white jacket with inside pockets, but it limits WHAT I can carry. Is this gonna be a pocket rocket winter?

What do you guys do in winter?

Same holster, same gun, same carry position. Just an extra layer above it is all. Practice makes perfect.

If the situation arises, I don't want to be trying to remember where I moved my weapon to. If it is always in the same spot, muscle memory kicks in.

Hmmmm....maybe it seems more complicated because I primarily OC. I'm not advocating anything, just commenting. I do both methods, just prefer it in the open minus garments for the quick grab. Winter gets in the way.

Just a question, but would your coat / outer garment cover the weapon? So it would be pretty much the same carry but CC. That way, you are comfortable with the carry and familiar with it if the need were to arise. All that would be extra is a swipe of a coat / shirt to get the weapon out.

I carry a Kimber Ultra Carry II in an OWB holster under my jacket. I also wear a layer under the jacket that isn't tucked in. Both are long enough to cover the holster nicely.

Yep, it would cover, and all my coats are big and heavy. Unless I wear one of my field jackets, but for those I have no liners. Thats why I'm looking for a new one. Probably have to cross into Minnesota (bleh) to buy one in my size since most Wisconsinites look like dwarves from way up here...

In summer when I do CC, it's usually just a lightweight button up shirt, one that flutters in the lightest breeze and offers zero resistance to accessing the gun. These coats are different.

Is pocket rocket a common term for a firearm? When i google it i don't see any references to firearms..... i hope you aren't carrying what i found.

Lol nasty. Its common enough on these forums. I'm referring to a pistol small enough to fit into a pocket yet easy to just whip it out lmao. My P22 is a pocket rocket. Some other examples would be Beretta Bobcat/Tomcat, Ruger SR22...you get the idea?

Seems to me that you need to practice more to become more comfortable with drawing from concealment. Being that I also live in the great white north, I carry my 1911 in the same position 365. Concealed carry went into effect Nov. 1st 2011.

That is true, but I was counting from the start of January when permits became available to us.

I've switched to 10 o clock crossdraw for now until I get a new jacket. I spent maybe an hour yesterday trying to defeat the extreme bulk of my jackets, and with the exception of my field jackets, which are not warm enough, normal carry is impossible. Maybe I will get a shoulder rig. I had one years ago, but since we didn't have CC and I was a student and couldn't carry anywhere, it got sold or lost. Sold, I hope. Any suggestions for an economically priced shoulder rig? I don't mind used, I have lots of foam and I can cut it to fit any gun I've got.

Same thing I do in summer. See, I have enough sense to use a front pants pocket holster and a Diamondback DB9 9mm, cause I understand that it's stupid to have different guns in different places, different times of the year, different clothing. It's called KISS. Under lethal stress,I don't want to "reach" someplace where I aint carrying the gun, or reach FOR some type of gun that aint what I'm actually carrying. i"ve made a few "panic" draws. The gun just seems to ''grow out of your wrist". That's what I want, not fumbling around for a 'few seconds" trying to figure out what I'm carrying and where it is.

I just picked up the S&W shield through my dept and it fits into a pocket real nice. With the right pocket holster you forget it's even there.
