Pocket Pistol Purchase Considerations

I am considering buying a new pocket size pistol. I'm considering the following:
Beretta Nano
S&W M&P Shied
Ruger LCP
Ruger LC9
Walther PPQ

I'm open to any other suggestions.
I would also like to hear people's experience with these pistols; pros & cons.

Thanks Jesse

Take a look at the Sig p290 as well. Side by side of those others, it usually rises to the top. You'll pay a little more for it, but IMO it's definitely worth it.

I pocket carry all the time and found that the bigger guns don't carry well in the pocket and I also didn't care for the .380 stopping power was tight on the edge of acceptable. That sent me a different direction. Consider this S and W airweight 38+p, great stoping power and 14oz less printing and with all the lint no jamming. The 38+p is quite a bit higher on the one shot stop list than the 9mm. I like the double/single action model for the single action option it gives you a lighter trigger and more accuracy in long shot situation. This is the most pocket carried pistol in the US that is not a .380. Good luck.

Depends on your body size & shape and how you dress. Smaller person and lighter clothing; smaller gun. I'm medium size so I go for baby Glocks, LC9, Nano sized weapons. I do carry an LCP when I dress real light and a G22 for winter wear though.

I've been pocket carrying a Kahr PM9 for the last few months. Good size, incredibly accurate pistol. I also carry a G26 in an OWB, although not both at the same time.

Don't buy into the one shot stopping power. It's really irrelevant when your real need in a defensive situation is to deploy the lethal option until the threat has stopped. My decision is a 3 round minimum - I was instructed while in LE. As far as a pocket carry, Virtigo has the right advice-its all about your size and the clothing for the day. I vary between a LC9, LCP and a S&W 642

they all seem like good and easy to conceal guns
guess you should try handling and firing them to get a feel for which is best for you....
i also would like a smaller gun than the one i have to conceal because i'm practicing wearing mine now and it has a big butt that kinda bulky and if someone were watching me to see if i was concealing they would most likely guess i am. heavy sweaters or jackets is not an option down here in tropical south florida
so let me know what you finally decide on and the pros and cons about the gun as i too someday will look to get a more concealable gun now if i could only win that giveaway that problem would be solved for me :girl_wink:

I have a LC9 and absolutely love it- that being said, me being a 160 lb, 5'11" male, with a 28 in waste- I would never consider it for pocket carry. I personally think that, at least for me, it is to big to get it easily out of my pockets- even with cargo shorts.

That being said, a friend of mine has a LCP that he carries in his pocket every day and he says it works great for the purpose of a BUG. However, it should be noted that he also said that if he could only have one gun it would be a LC9, IWB carry; this is the method I have chose to carry when going for concealed carry, and I can make it effectively disappear even wearing a medium sized shirt. It does print a little with a small sized shirt.

I assume this would be obvious- but I would highly recommend before purchasing a gun for the sole purpose of pocket carry, make sure you can easily get it out (and back in) in every position you will want to be able to use it and defend yourself, including sitting.

Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Might want to look at the Sig P238.

My wife had a LCP (it kicked like a mule). She is VERY happy with her new Sig P238, & shoots much better with it than the high recoil LCP.

I don't pocket carry but have a Sig P230 and a LC9 and find them both accurate reliable options when conditions dictate.

To clarify, I used the term pocket sized guns, meaning in size. I never liked the idea of carrying a gun in my pocket. I was just looking for a gun to carry in the Summer. That would conceal well under a T-shirt & shorts.

Currently my Summer carry gun is a Walther PPK/S. Which I carry in a KHolster Little Moon, or a Galco Stow-n-Go.

I stand 6'1" at around 185 lbs. I guess I'm looking for an excuse to buy another gun.

Thanks for the replies.

I wish it was easy to test fire my choices, so I have to rely on other people's experience with those guns. A buddy of mine just put a deposit on a M&P Shield, so I'll be waiting for feedback from him.

Once I get my new toy, I'll give an After Action Report.

that's pretty much what i'm doing just reading others experiences with different guns get all the info i can on them being i don't have access to other guns but my son says you can rent different guns at the range ......i fired my sons friends gun forgot what it was but it was way too powerful for me i didn't even want to shoot it again .....lol i think i'll stick to guns in a .380 calibre those larger rounds make alot of noise and way too powerful for my taste but kudos to those who can carry and use those effectively

I really like my Walther PK380. I am 5'10" & about 220#. The PK fits my hand perfectly, conceals well IWB, shoulder holster or pocket and shoots great.

i was reading on that gun the other day the 'Walther PK380' definitely a nice carry gun kinda pricey as well
but i'm sure you take care of it it will last a long long time well made gun too it seems

I just bought a S&W Bodygaurd .380. It has the built in laser sight which is something I would not usually be interested in but the gun comes with it. It has a 6+1 capacity and only weighs about 12oz. It is basically invisable in IWB holster with just a T-shirt over it. I have not shot the gun yet, but will post after I do. The laser is pretty cool, I am anxious to see how acurate it is.
