Please send this letter to your Reps. in Washington, this Sergeant First Class is getting railroaded big time.

Subject: The unacceptable involuntary discharge of Sergeant First Class Charles Martland, USA, for protecting innocent Afghan citizens from rogue Afghan police commander trained, armed, and paid with U.S. taxpayer dollars.

Sir,

I am writing to you today to not only ask, but to demand that Secretary of Defense Ash Carter be compelled to testify before Congress concerning the politically motivated involuntary discharge that is pending concerning Sergeant First Class Charles Martland, United States Army, an 11-year Special Forces non-commissioned officer who intervened against a local Afghan police commander who was abusing innocent Afghan civilians.

I am certain that you are aware of the matter that Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-California, has already questioned Secretary Carter on without response. In the event that you are unfamiliar with the facts in the matter I will provide you a brief overview.

On his second deployment (2011), SFC Martland was assigned in a local village setting to assist in training, advising, and supplying the American backed local police. When it came to SFC Martland’s attention that the Afghan police commander had raped a young Afghan boy and beaten the boy’s mother, SFC Martland confronted the police commander concerning the incident. When confronted by SFC Martland on the abuse of power and authority (using the backing of the United States government to abuse innocent citizens of the Afghan village) the Afghan police commander laughed about his behavior and a physical confrontation followed.

Instead of being commended for his attention to duty in defense of the innocent Afghans being abused by a corrupt Afghan official, the United States Army relieved SFC Martland “for cause” and reassigned him in spite of being described by his teammates as “the finest soldier they have ever served alongside.”

Since 2011, SFC Martland has served as an instructor at the Special Forces school, John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he has continued to produce the very best Special Forces warriors this country has ever had. Indeed, SFC Martland was recognized in 2014 as the runner-up for the Special Warfare Training Group as the “Instructor of the Year” over a field of some 400 candidates!

The Pentagon’s actions in this case are unconscionable and political in motivation! Instead of discharging SFC Martland, one of our best and most honorable soldiers, the Pentagon is making a mockery of loyalty, courage, valor, and military service!

I will accept nothing less of you, my Representative in the United States House of Representatives or Senate, than that you insist that Secretary Ash Carter be compelled to testify before Congress on this matter and guarantee that this kind of abuse of U.S. service personnel will not be tolerated in the future; and

If the Pentagon will not right the wrong that is being perpetrated against this fine NCO, and reinstate him to service with his record cleansed of any punitive letters or actions against him in this case, that the Congress will begin to consider legislatively reducing the base pay of flag officers (general and admiral grade officers) 10% by law in future Defense Department budgets—including the Secretary of Defense and his civilian DoD personnel!

SFC Charles Martland displayed extreme courage and character on behalf of our nation in this case. I am certain that it would be consistent with all of his professional character of service for as long as he has worn the uniform and stood to defend our liberties. If there are soldiers that we must not lose, SFC Charles Martland is certainly at the top of the list!

I expect you to vigorously fight for SFC Martland in this case, and for our service members throughout the military against the abuse that this political White House and Obama’s Pentagon leadership displays toward those who honorably serve our nation in uniform (and I use the term ‘leadership’ in their regard with extreme looseness)!

Sincerely,
