I received my permit today along with my very first firearm (S&W Bodyguard 38 Special Revolver) and on my new pistol permit there are some letters I dont know what they mean. Maybe someone can help me out. I live in Ulster County NY. Ok under the restriction part it has H/F/T/HI/DEP/P R

Now I think the first 4 are Hunting, Fishing, Target and Hiking.
But I dont have any clue on the last 2. Could someone please help out in this. thank you!!!

Clarification needed

Being from a more normal state, I need a bit of a clarification. Is this a permit to purchase/own or a permit to carry? If it is a carry permit, the P could be for protection. I have no idea what the other one is. If you haven't already, I would try looking it up in NY's permit website. They'll have definitions for everything.

There is no reason to fear asking the issuer what it means. As an aside, let me assure you that in NY state, a license to carry means you must carry concealed. Carrying outside your restriction is not a criminal act and court precedent assures that you will not be held as a criminal. However the judge (issuer) may be annoyed if you carry outside your restriction and pull your license. Of course, he has that option at anytime, so it is irrelevant unless you lose your license.

NY City (five boroughs) is a different story entirely. Your license is no good there.

It's a concealed carry permit. P would not be for protection as that right is already provided under PL Article 35 and 265. You may carry loaded and concealed from the time you leave your home until you return from any of these activities.

Once again, please don't confuse NYS with NYC. Trust me, most who think NYS is bad have only one thing over on us; we're a discretionary issue state. Yet of the thousands of students I've trained, only one has ever been denied a permit. And an unrestricted carry permit is generally possible by taking one of many approaches. Once issued our carry rights trump many so called gun-friendly states. We can carry in a bar, restaurant, hospitals, churches, banks, on public transportation, public lands and the permit never need be renewed. We remain pretty much unmolested. I keep reading about these restricted areas in state after state. NY permits are good for life unless revoked for cause.

The permit restrictions described are pretty close to an unrestricted. I recently had a student receive an unrestricted right from the start. The judge advised him he doesn't usually do this until the permit holder has some experience. He made the exception because the student took extra concealed carry training before filing his application.

Call Maureen at the pistol permit department. She's very nice and will explain the coding for you. Then PM me, I believe the restrictions can be lifted entirely.

Just to clarify...

On my Permit for NYS there is no space between P and R. When I posted it without a space it censored it for some reason. So it is DEP/ P R without the space. I will call the pistol permit unit to find out what it means. The issuing judge told me it is the closet thing to an unrestricted permit he will give me for now but to put it through again in 1 year and he would entertain it for full carry being as my background and character witnesses are excellent. It is Judge Gilpatric. Thank you everyone for getting back to me so quickly!

Permit to carry. I think the last one is Premises.

Thank you

I will absolutely let you know what I find out in a PM. I have a call out to Maureen, I left a message. And I thank you for getting back to me. I am actually very interested in taking a few courses. And now that I have my permit I am looking into where and when they are available. Maybe you could point me in the right direction with which courses to take, Thank you!!

Just an update.....I found out that DEP means Deposits....go figure. So my restrictions are:

Hunting/Fishing/Target/Hiking/Deposits/Premises. Seems like a lot to me.
