PETA plans porn website to promote message

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is planning to launch a pornographic website to promote its animal rights and vegan diet message, a move that critics say will backfire and ostracize them from mainstream society.

PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt said in a telephone interview from Los Angeles on Tuesday that the group has applied with ICM Registry to launch the website peta.xxx.

Rajt says the site will feature "tantalizing" videos and photographs, which will lead viewers into animal rights messages. She noted that Norfolk-based PETA has used porn stars and nudity to get its message across in the past, including an annual speech online in which a PETA representative undresses. That video later shares a message about slaughterhouses.

She says a pornographic site will allow PETA to reach a broader audience and that publicity about the site is just as important.

"I think the bottom line is we live a in a 24-hour news cycle where over the years we've found our racier actions are kind of a fast track way to get people to stand up and pay attention about the plight of animals," she said.

Rajt says November is the earliest that PETA could receive approval for the site. Critics say that by resorting to pornography, PETA is alienating itself from a large swath of the population that might otherwise be sympathetic to its cause.

"I just don't want to understand why they want to offend people who would potentially support at least part of their cause. There have got to be other ways to draw attention to their cause," said Robert Peters, general counsel for the New York-based anti-pornography group Morality in Media. "Metaphorically speaking, they're getting in bed with hard core pornographers to prevent cruelty to animals. That borders on insanity."

Rajt said PETA officials would track the website to determine if people are viewing the animal rights messages and not just the nudity. Past experience has shown that they will, she said.

J. Justin Wilson, senior research analyst for the food-industry backed Center for Consumer Freedom, said moves like this by PETA make them increasingly irrelevant in mainstream society.

"They don't seem to be changing the debate anymore, I think in large part because people are writing them off as whack jobs," he said from Washington. "This is one more example of them being their own worst enemy. If they're trying to win the hearts and minds of people considering being vegetarians, this is probably the wrong way to do it."

The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va. first reported PETA's plans.

All I have to say is "WTF?" Should USACARRY start it's own porn site "USACARRY.XXX" to help get the word out about gun rights and carry permits LOL. Some how I see firearms and nudity going better together then nudity and slaughter houses, but maybe that's just me.

Hey now.... I am a member of PETA, thank you very much:

People who Eat Tasty Animals. I believe there is room on this Earth for all of God's creatures, usually next to the mashed potatoes. If God didn't want us to eat animals, then why did he make them out of meat?

That's where the term "eco facism" comes in. A fascist does not care about the means for reaching his goals, any means are good for him if they work. And trust me, I am German, I have forgotten more about facism than most of the folks in here will ever learn about it. This part of our history has been drilled into us.

PETA launching a porn site? Cool! Now the question in my mind is will the women be good looking? They could launch a site featuring very large nude women as a warning to those who overindulge in animal derived products.

Hope the do it right and feature hot chicks! :)

They will be hot. But according to their plan once you get lured in they will eventually start mixing those pics with pics of animal cruelty. Which will result in 2 things:

- porn is ruined for you
- meat is ruined for you

Possibly both

Sounds exciting! Not to mention a tad bit kinky as well. ;-)

I love vegetarians, they taste like chicken.

Yeah, PETA has always been a bunch of nutjobs. I'm all for preventing animal cruelty, but the Humane Society is a lot better organization to support for that than the "all we care about is publicity" PETA.

(Unless you're talking about "People for the Eating of Tasty Animals", then I'm all for it.)

Then there's PETA's hypocracy. (PETA runs an animal shelter. It euthanizes over 90% of the animals that come in. In comparison the national average of about 50%, according to the Humane Society of the US.)

I used to support the HSUS until I started reading and following HumaneWatch.org (HumaneWatch). Now, I support animal rescue groups and local shelters directly.

I got my first Rottweiler here in the USA from the Humane Society. 8 months later he died...and so did nearly our wallet. We will never get another animal from the Humane Society. As for PETA, what a peettah that they have to resort to this kind of tactics. Is someone actually thinking over there?

PETA is an organization that thrives on publicity. They are almost completely ineffective and their goals are to ELIMINATE human/animal interaction altogether. No pets, no farm animals, no meat, nothing. PETA is seeking a final goal that no sane person could support. It would mean abandoning any human intervention in animal habitat, breeding, conservation, etc..

The Humane Society of the United States(HSUS) is another organization that popped up in the relatively recent times to take advantage of name confusion. The HSUS is not the same group as the Humane Societies across the country that run most of the shelters. They relied upon the name confusion to gather support and funds. Those funds that would have gone to support shelters and save lives were instead spend by the HSUS on lobbying and other political pursuits.

PETA is a political movement that raises money by acting like a clown putting on a show for attention. They are maniacal and murderous liars.
The HSUS is a political movement that raises money by confusing people using a name that sounds familiar. They do not care about the animals. All they care about is their influence in politics.

If you want to help animals, research and support your local Humane Society if they're doing a good job. Never support the HSUS, and certainly not PETA.
