Personal Readiness

Been back in the dojang the last several weeks (3 times per week), kicking, punching, pushups, situps, stretching, getting kicked, getting punched. Holy sh#t! Am I sore! But it feels GOOD!

This is meant as encouragement for you other "old dogs". Git 'er done!

O.K. I am going to try and get back to a regular exercise program.

Made it to the gym. First time in quite a while. Lifted for about an hour. Going to do aerobic work tomorrow. Now if I can just stick with it.

Now HK, you know better than that! Don't say "if". You can do it. Good thing about doing drywall work, keeps me in pretty good shape .:hang3:

Attaboy, HK! I figure it this way: your health and maybe your life depends on you sticking to it. Personally, I always get some activity in, so I stay in "reasonable" shape. My problem, tho: eating too much! So, back to eating right and kicking the workouts up a few levels.

O.K. guys no if I can . I will do it. How is that for positive thinking. Yes eating is something I like way to much myself.

At the beginning of the year I was thinking about "New Years Resolutions" and I had this blank moment. Then it hit me.
I began to think about the Boy Scout motto and how long it had been since I really thought about what it meant. If I had to prevent someone from disarming me how well would I fair? If I needed to get up in the middle of the night to check if that noise was a serious issue, How would I do that so as not to shoot the wife, kids, or the cat? I am self aware so I have to say that these skills need some practice.

I used to attend the Glock Sport-Shoot events here in MA (When Glock was still welcome in MA) with the local police Lt, his nephew, and a good friend of mine who was on the force at the time. The Lt. was a great shot and a good teacher. I miss that now.
So My local firearms dealer is a State Police officer and tactical trainer. We have spoken about his training sessions. So a long story short. That's my resolve for the year. To become better prepared and have that much more confidence..
And have fun doing it..

Then the gym thing... I gotta do it... Did it before can do it again...

Great reminder about the other R...
We have Rights and we also have Responsibility.

You guys make a good point and I'm not arguing that but in my personal case my job is very physicly demanding, I have all I can do to make it thru the day any more, as far as being prepared, we have flashlights and some servival packs stashed, spare guns, going to the gym is almost funny, nice idea but not realistic, at least in my case

That's fine, RG, if you're physically active at work, then you have a leg up on those of us who sit on our butts all day. I have to make a conscious decison to get some physical activity every day. Whatever works, man.

Hmmm...just got talked into starting a martial arts class (WTF - TKD) yesterday. Class starts in two week at the local dojang. My first 2 students are local LEO who are friends of mine; this should be fun! Also, gonna force me to get back into "fighting shape"...

What about other skills???

Can you...Make Fire?
Can you...Deal with a sucking chest wound?
Can you...find food?
Can you...navigate cross country using topo maps and a compass?

All of these and more contribute to personal readiness. Let's keep this discussion going...I'll go put on a pot of coffee.

I've been amazed at the people who can't make a fire, a skill I learned as a Boy Scout (teepee lay, crisscross lay, etc).

Sucking chect wound? I'd need some training on that. I am good to go on basic first aid.

Find food? I know the ways of the wild critters I hunt, so that's a plus. Edible plants...not so much. Can kill, field-dress, skin, and butcher the critters I hunt.

Navigate cross country? Oh, yeah, there's that Boy Scout thing again. Dang, Scouts was good!

Here's one: Can you construct a waterproof shelter using only materials found in the woods? We did this routinely as kids...and they worked.

I have done a fair amount of book study on these subjects but I will have to admit that as far as practical experience only minimal. When I was younger my wife, kids and I did some camping and my older brother and I did some backpacking when I would visit him in Colorado. It has been a long time though. Perhaps it is time to plan some camp outs for my wife and I and get a little practice in. Finding my way with map and compass is high on my list of skills to strengthen. Can not depend on the GPS always working.

fire yes as long as i have matches and / or lighters. i have boxes of both!! the bow drill i have not tried since i was in school. all i did was make smoke.
chest wound? i have knowledge of how, but thankfully never had to do it for real.
find food? yes. except for winter when i have resorted to fishing.
navigation? not much since i was in the guard, unless you count traveling the highways and using a highway map.
this is a great topic. we need to build this thing up.
i have built shelter out of available materiel. i built a rock wall in a semi circle and covered the top with a tarp. the only minus was that i should have made the wall taller because i could not sit up straight. but i slept great!! even had a floor in it.
ok... what else?

Now is almost too late

Look around and figure out where your next weeks groceries are coming from if they shut down all the banks and stores right now. Don't poo poo the idea. Look at Venezuela as an example of what could happen. Food is rotting in Gov't warehouses while the arm kicks in doors of store and shop owners accused of Hoarding. Get prepared now. If you are not and the worst happens don't come to me because I cannot help you then. You need help now. READ...STUDY...LEARN...PREPARE!!!

90 days of food and a supply of water. Some ammo, too, enough to hold off raiders, but not UN troops.
