Personal info given out by gun shop?

Wondering if anyone on here might have legal knowledge that I don't. A few months ago, I took one of my rifles to a local gun shop (in Wyoming, if that matters) and traded for a different firearm. Tonight, I received a call from a man asking me where I had purchased the rifle. When I asked who he was and how he got my name and number, he stated that a salesman at the gun shop had given it to him. Just wondering if it is legal for a gun shop to give out personal information.

The other interesting thing is that my wife was the one who filled out the paperwork to make the trade - somehow they were still given my name - just makes the whole thing seem dirty somehow.

Any info you might have would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well buddy, I am not a lawyer, but I would be pretty ticked off about that. I have traded numerous guns in the past number of years, but never had that happen to me. Once I sign that serial number over to the FFL, it is theirs and not mine, so don't bother me about it again. That does not seem to me to be a legal thing for them to do. What if they would have sold that gun to some kind of whack job or something, that decided to bother you all the time about the gun he bought from them? I don't blame you for feeling uncomfortable about that situation.:fie:

I would not return to that shop again and if need be I would change my number. Sounds like a fly by night operation! I have never had that happen to me unless I had a item for sale and they found me a buyer. I sold a 24 gun safe like that at one local shop. They called around and then had the customer call me back to work out the price and when to pick it up. As for it being legal or not I can not say. But I know I would be calling the owner and chewing him a new one.

I would also go to the shop and chew on the owner. They should have never given out your information and would tell him he had just lost a customer.

Thanks for the replies. I went to the shop today and spoke to the owner. Told him the entire story - he was pretty ticked himself and promised to handle it with his staff. First time I believe I've ever walked out of there without at least buying something - he noticed! Thanks for the input - you were helpful.

Most of the shops I go to here in Wyoming respect a persons privacy. You did good to talk to the owner. No need to chew out, just discuss the problem and come up with a solution. If you could, would you PM me and let me know what shop it is? I travel around the state for work and it would be nice to know what gun shops may be a problem.

I don't have any info to offer. However, if it happened to me, I'd at least publish the name/location of the dealer in the gun forums with the story.

These types of dealers need to be avoided by everyone.

I respectfully disagree (at least partially). If it was an inconsiderate employee that let out the personal information, AND that person were fired, then I'd have no problem going back to that dealer. If this was a policy of that shop, then I avoid that dealer at all costs.
