permit

Local hotel in Richmond,VA where I have been staying recently requested a copy of my permit to carry after noticing gun boxes In my room. Do I need to allow them to copy my card? I would probably have no problem showing it. I don't really know why they would want a copy of my chp. What should I do?

Absolutely not. The only person you're required to show your permit to is a LEO. Personally, I think it's a little ridiculous that they ask to see your permit (I wouldn't show it to them) but to actually want a copy of it? That's completely absurd. I'd ask for a refund and check out immediately. I'd rather stay in a Motel 6 than a 5 star that wanted a copy of my permit.

If you are staying there they already have your personal information? They probably just want to make sure you're legit and not some hoodlum.

They don't have the right or the authorization to ask you for permit. Having a gun in a case that is secured is not illegal. I would just tell them no and go back up to my room.

I may be wrong - and somebody here always tells me I am whenever I post - but I have a few thoughts on this situation.

A) They are seeing gun cases in your room. You're allowed to have personal property in your room, so they can go whistle.

B) They are asking to see a carry permit without ascertaining that you are carrying - unless you're carrying 'openly? Still, not a matter for management I don't think.

C) If they have concerns, they can call a LEO to check your permit. Otherwise, it's none of their damned business.

D) They are probably doing this to satisfy some sissy-ass maid who thinks you'll walk in and rape her at gun point. NOT YOUR PROBLEM what she thinks. Tell them to pound sand and assign a different maid.

E) It's none of the hotel's business if you carry or not. The state manages THAT behavior.

F) So you probably have two choices - leave on your own to find a less intrusive place to stay, or argue with management about their intrusion and risk being asked to leave. Same result, your choice. You might even get them to back off and mind the hotel's business and not yours. Or, you could choose to have that discussion loudly at the check-in counter when they are busy, and ask if they will harass other guests about their personal possessions in their rooms.

G) By now the staff is talking. Make sure to lock your stuff up and chain it to the bed or something else immovable. If you don't it may be stolen. You should probably just find another hotel with furniture or closets big enough to hide your stuff from the maid staff. They don't usually bother looking into drawers or closets because the doors are supposed to be open. If they don't see 'gun stuff' they'll have no reason to tell anyone else that there is that kind of stuff there, so less likelihood of theft.

Just ignore their request....
or better yet, simply tell them that you don't own any guns, you just use the gun cases/boxes for storing your toothbrush and other grooming needs.

It's none of their ***damned business!

While I am not a lawyer, nor profess to know Virginia law, having a gun in a hotel is not carrying. A hotel room in most states is a rented extension of a personal residence. Even the Republic of New Jersey recognizes the legality of having a loaded gun in a hotel room, if you are allowed to own and have it otherwise, and it is not considered carrying.....Change hotels....

DO NOT TAKE THIS ADVICE! The hotel has no legal right to request this information so DO NOT give it to them.... Period!

Ask to see their housekeeping staff's proof of citizenship or green cards in exchange.....threaten to call La Migra if they pester you about it anymore.

absolutely not, inform them you do not discus such issues with anyone but LEO. Further, if someone was IN your room and saw what they take to be firearms cases, someone has marked you as a gun owner, and has them with you. I'd leave that establishment immediately. No telling who ELSE that person told, and whether any other staff might not be tempted, or actually carry out, to steal your guns whilst you're away during the day. I'd say their trust has been proven untenable. I'd not stay in such a place any longer. Next time, keep the boxes in a suitcase, that well stashed in the closet. Cases locked, suitcase as well. Minimise your risk of loss... which is quite high at this point. In fact, I'd seriously consider reporting the incident to police, as your security may well have been compromised. The blabbermouth staff needs to be dealt with. Maids are there to clean the room, not snoop, nor to report on ANYTHING they have seen. If your arms are legally possessed, they should be handled no differently than your electric shaver.

What Hotel? That's complete BS, I'd like to report them to the VCDL. Especially since no permit is required in VA unless you conceal. Either way they don't have the authority.

The fact is, the hotel is a private business. They can place whatever requirements they like on renting a room to you, as long as the requirement doesn't violate civil rights laws. They can require you to wear plaid. They can require you to listen to disco music. So you can either comply with their request or find somewhere else to stay. Or you can argue with them, in which case they might advise you to leave or they might back off or they might call the police.

Being rude to them will only reinforce their belief that people who own guns are crazy and probably dangerous.
