Permit questions

I live in Illinois (unfortunately due to the no CC laws) and my brother and I were looking into acquiring the two permits within the US that will allow carry in the 39 states I believe it is. Is it Utah and Florida CC permits? And how much do each of them run? I understand that I have to attend a safety class and I can do that within my area. Anyone know what the class has to cover and how long it has to be? There is an 8 hour within my area and they said it would work for the permits but I just wanted to make sure and double check. We are both familiar with handguns and own a few.

Thanks in advance for any help that you all can provide!

It's very easy to google Utah license and the Florida one. Utah was about $48.00 and Florida was $107.00.
If you take a CCW class, they usually give you the forms and do the fingerprinting as well. You will need the training certificate as well.
Class is minimum 4 hours and usually covers the laws concerning CCW, how to handle a firearm and/or clear malfunctions and safety tips. Some also go into CCW choosing of a handgun and holsters if you ask them to.

Virginia also has a non resident CCW license available to non residents.. I say they more the merrier... Whats great about Florida is they have a 7 Year License... If you were in the Service you dont need the class as you simply submit your DD214..

I was looking into getting an Arizona... It gets god coverage, and is one of the few Nevada seems to recognize anymore...

With the Utah permit you must take the class from an authorized instructor. If you go to the Utah BCI website you will find a list of out of state instructors. The Utah permit is cheaper to get and renew, but because it has to be from an authorized instructor the Florida permit may be easier.

i thought it was a law that you needed a ccw permit in your home state first in order to get a non resident permit in another state? this could be wrong but i know for a fact some states such as PA require a permit in the home state in order to get a non resident for PA. maybe someone else knows more about this.

Utah recently added such a requirement, if, and only if, the resident state issues permits and the state has reciprocity with UT or recognizes UT permit. So an IL resident is still able to get a UT permit. As can those from CA, NY and other maynot issue states.

Depending on what states you're planning to travel to, you could go for or the other. They both cover 32 states, 30 of which are the same. The difference is utah covers Minnesota and Wisconsin (which Florida does not) and Florida covers New Mexico and Kansas (which Utah does not). Living in Illinois I'd assume you are more likely to travel to Minnesota or Wisconsin than New Mexico or Kansas making just Utah a cheaper choice. But if the extra two states are worth the extra $100 for you go for it.

I live in Washington and have a Washington, Oregon and Arizona and am covered in 37 states. Of the thirteen I'm missing the only one I really would like to gain is Colorado. Unfortunately, they only issue and recognize resident permits and do not yet have reciprocity with Washington. As far as i can tell I'm SOL until the two states start talking or I buy land in Colorado.

Great! Glad to her i could be of help.

Best combinations are really dependent on the state in which you reside in, seeing as how most states won't issue a non-res permit without you first having a resident permit in your state. It's also a balance between cost and coverage. I'm sure someone out there knows the golden combo if price isn't a factor though.
