permit apps sent off but kinda worried

My wife and I finally got our permit apps turned in.... Yea!
But let break down this story for y'all and y'all can reply as I'm kinda worried mine may not go thru.
10 years ago (I was 25 and living in TN) I had a party at my house. During the party my little brother, then 21, consumed a good bit of alcohol and became a little rowdy and tried to start a fight with someone. I made him go cool off while I told everyone else it was time to leave.
After they were all gone he and I sat on the front porch talking where he proceeded to tell me he was going to kick my butt, kinda my fault hesat was aa puny kid when he was little and got picked on a bunch so my older brother and I taught him to fight and utterly turned him into bad---. Anyway I told him it was time for him to go to bed and got up to open the door when he hit me next thing I remember my wife(at the time) was in my back clawing and screaming and I came around and saw my Bro laying unconscious. I panicked and called 911. The law came and took me to jail on simple assault charges.
I had to go to court and the judge asked if I did it I was feeling bad for what happened but didn't lie and I told him yeah I whooped him. I figured since it was at my house and he was a visitor that got physical with me first that it wouldn't be any problem. Wrong he entered it as a guilty plea and told me that if I'd take court appointed anger management class he would expunge it from my record. I took the class and nothing more was ever said. Until about 7 yrs later I went to purchase a pistol and they flagged me and I had to wait for over 2 weeks to get my gun and then I got the notice saying that it was up to the gun shop if they wanted to sell me the gun or not because the TBI couldn't get all my records open in the time allowed. The previous rifles I bought during that 7 yrs never flagged. But now every gun since has rifle or whatever but I've never been turned down just had to wait an extra 2 wks.
I moved to MS 2 yrs ago with my new wife and decided to get our permits. The assault showed up but stated it was dismissed. And the guy at mdps didn't act like it was a big deal since it was dismissed and was so long ago and he sent it on to FBI for the national background check.
Do I need to assume that it is ok? Am I worried for no reason?

Just as a note for those who may wonder....
This incident lead me stop drinking in ten yrs I've had less than a 12pck and none in the last seven. And the only parties I've had or been to since where birthday parties for my children or nieces or nephews. God is in control of my life now eventho we sometimes don't see eye to eye.

doesn't sound like something that would keep you from getting your permit. I wouldn't let it stress you out, that's for sure. I'm sure there is a way to appeal it as well if it doesn't go through but I am thinking you won't have any problems.

Thanks CRW a little reassurance goes a long way. We are really excited about getting them my wife especially. At first she was like just get yours you'll be with me anywhere I may need it, now she's like im really excited about the permit I can't wait to get it. I think the gun shopping afterwards may have had something to do with it. She has a want for an M&P compact 9.

hope all goes well for you both! Does she know where she is going to carry it yet? I would honestly suggest having her carry one around the house for a day to see how it fits her comfort wise. The M&P is a great gun and I know she will like it but she might find that she wants something smaller unless she plans on stowing it in her purse. Has she held the small Rugers like the LCP and LCR? I think they are both excellent carry weapons and are very light.

I live in Iowa and my simple assult made me loose my job in 2009 but was able to get my permit to carry in 2011. Go figure, u should have no problem

She didn't like the feel of the Ruger in her hands I was surprised when she chose it over an xd but it was just an xd and not the xdm. She didnt like the CZ's they had either. We have a few weeks to shop around I figure we will wait on the permits then go get her ppe. This way we can shop around and be sure of what she wants. She doesn't want a light gun and she says she's not gonna holster it on her but probably in her purse. Im gonna work on changing her mind about a holster.

well if she plans on carrying it in her purse, a heavier gun will be fine I'm sure. If I carried a purse, I would carry a full sized 45 lol. Then I could cause more damage when I hit someone with my purse haha.

Woodruff, how long is the application process in MS? Unless a lawyer or Sheriff's Deputy who knows MS's carry laws inside and out answers your question here, anything any of the rest of says is pure speculation based on unrelated state laws. I'm kind of surprised to hear that your application process is even long enough to give you time to post the inquiry and get answers over at least a few days. Right next door in Alabama, we walk in, put our $15 or $20 bucks (depending on which county) on the table, the background check is done right there by a Sheriff's receptionist and the permit is issued with a thank you and smile. It only takes more than a couple of minutes if someone is ahead of you in line, which doesn't happen often in my rural county.

Anyway, I understand you being nervous about the prior incident showing up, but I'd caution you against taking any comfort in encouraging posts from people not in MS. Sounds like you're just going to have to wait for the process to run its course. When do you expect to hear something either way?

Yea I agree a purse is not ideal. Kinda hard yo get your gun when someone snatches it off your arm. I don't know why she don't want to holster it I don't think she feels comfortable carrying it on her person and she has said she just wants to keep it in the vehicle and not have to worry about having a gun in the car when we go outta state. Im still gonna get her a holster and get her to try it out.

Its a 45 day period after you turn in your application with MS being a shall issue state. As long as there are no felony records or misdemeanor domestic violence.
According to everything I've looked at and read I should b ok but there is still that little bit of lingering doubt.

In Mass

Our license is $100, we go to our local police dept to file our applications, which then get past on to the Massachusetts Criminal History board for review. I just re-newed mine, received it yesterday after waiting 4 Weeks. Then if you ARE approved, your local police can limit it to hunting and target only if the chief of police for that town decides not to issue a non-restricted.

My wife is a Nurse Practitioner and carries because of a fear of junkies trying to get drugs from her office (there are none) or her prescription pad. At her combat shooting class she was taught to cross parking lots with her hand on the gun in her pocketbook so if the purse is snatched, she'll have the gun, but not the purse. She carries the XD9 sub-compact with the extended magazine. She currently has a top draw pocketbook, but is considering a side draw one, too. Either will work about the same way.
