Pentagon: Young Adults Too Fat, Tattooed, Uneducated for Military

The sad part of this story is that it is true. If this trend continues, the military will be forced to accept sub-standard personnel that can hopefully be whipped into shape to perform their missions. The issue of tattoos is one that will cause a lot of consternation because they have become so popular in society and are sported by a lot of women. This trend may last for a few more years but, like everything else, will pass. In the meantime..........

The American military is facing a serious personnel issue: More than two-thirds of today's youth are too uneducated, have behavior issues, and are not physically fit enough for
service.

"We're trying to make decision makers see this is a national-security matter — and they need to prioritize it," retired Maj. Gen. Allen Youngman told The Wall Street Journal.

The major problem is obesity, reports military recruiters. But young adults are also being turned away because they lack high school diplomas, have felony convictions, and are on prescription drugs for ailments such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Still more do not meet the military's appearance standards. New rules issued in March forbid large-scale tattoos or more than four visible on a soldier's arms or legs. Tattoos are forbidden on other parts of the body not covered by a uniform.

In addition, potential recruits are being turned away because of extreme piercings, such as ear gauges that create large holes in people's earlobes.

As a result, the Defense Department estimates, about 71 percent of the 34 million young adults ages 17 to 24 would not be able to enlist if they tried, not counting people turned away for tattoos or other cosmetic issues.

Gen. Allen Batschelet, commanding general of U.S. Army Recruiting Command, said that the military is also having trouble attracting youths who are interested in serving, saying that only about one percent of young adults are both "eligible and inclined to have a conversation with us."

The Pentagon only recently began tracking eligibility, but experts say high school seniors now face the longest odds to quality for service since the draft ended in 1973.

About 180,000 eligible men and women volunteer for active-duty forces, with another 110,000 joining reserve and National Guard units.

And as foreign engagement increased in the Middle East in recent years, the military loosened its standards. In 2001, at least 90 percent who enlisted had finished high school, where in 2007, only 79 percent had graduated. But in 2001, the Army accepted recruits who had excess body fat.

"We have not adopted a zero-defect mentality. We evaluate each applicant from a
whole-person perspective," said Defense Department spokesman Nathan Christensen. He noted recruiting targets have been met in recent years.

The obesity problem is still looming. In the past, said Youngman, drill sergeants could run extra weight off new recruits, but now, there are people trying to enlist who are more than 50 pounds overweight.

Recruits also are having problems passing the Armed Forces Qualification Test, which measures their reading and math skills.

"They aren't educationally qualified to join the military in any capacity, not just the high-tech jobs," said Youngman.

Not physically fit enough? That's what basic is for. If that's not enough give them extra training and PT. Uneducated you can fix. Stupid you can't. Tattoo's don't keep you from defending your country.

Definitely a problem for a volunteer military. As an Army Recruiter for 14 years in the 70's and 80's we lost a good number of applicants each month because they were overweight. Male and female. I remember very few applicants who took the initiative to lose the weight and finally enlist. I felt that quite a few really wanted to join and could have made a contribution. I seem to remember that, when I enlisted in '67 during the draft and before the lottery, the Army had special BCT units known as "fat farms." Aparently these were special units for the overweight draftees with "special" diets and exercises designed to integrate the soldiers into regular units.

Seems like a pretty simple fix to solve the current obesity problem for those that really want to enlist. The problem as I see it is to motivate them somehow to keep the weight off while serving.

The only other option is to reinstate the draft, better yet, universal service for both sexes with fat farms built into the system because we will still have the obesity problem. As for the "tattoo problem," while l tend to agree with the new regs, I'm getting old as are the folks who make the decisions regarding these issues. Our society is continually changing and the military needs to accept this.

Just imagine what would have happened during the draft if this new "tattoo reg" had been in effect. Rather than running off to Canada, the cowards would have just had to get some visible tats and, voila, no service. Rather a silly rule I think unless the tats are blatantly antisocial or hostile in which case there might be underying mental issues anyway. I'm thinking of things such as swastikas or racist comments, etc.

As for the ASVAB the military also has to adapt to accept the people being graduated by the government education system. Common Core graduates should really be interesting.

I think the crux of the matter is not fat OR tattoos. When the general says:
only about one percent of young adults are both "eligible and inclined to have a conversation with us."
I think the problem lies more with the "inclined" part. Take a look next time you are in an establishment that has mostly minimum wage employees, check the adult to teen ratio. A large portion of todays youth are too busy to get a job. They have video games to play, phones that they couldn't use if they were working, and don't have the basic skills to successfully interview for a job. Their parents give them everything out of guilt for not raising them, or just to stop their whining because it is easier than real parenting. They want to just kick back, go to college on someone else's dime and get a liberal arts degree in Womens Studies or some other such nonsense, then get a "job" where they don't have to work.
-
With many schools doing most of todays child rearing, and teaching convoluted versions of history while not saying the Pledge of Allegiance or teaching what it means if they do, it's not a surprise that patriotism has gone astray.
-
The last boom in enlistment was immediately after 9/11/2001. Think about it.
-
I can tell you that before I got out of the Coast Guard we were getting recruits in with Associates and Bachelors degrees. I had one kid with a Masters in Philosophy. They realized that their educations weren't properly directed to be useful in society. I can also tell you that there is a lot to philosophize on when told to clean the head...

I'll bet they're never TOO GAY for today's military.

Tattoo's don't keep you from defending your country.

Tattoos are another indicator of how we are dhimmitizing the US mitary. Our women can't leave unaccompanied, drive, or wear short clothes off base in muslim countries. At this moment, our troops in muslim countries are being trained to observe and obey many ramadan prohibitions in preparation for that month-long (no, they aren't being forced to fast - yet) observation. The whole tattoo prohibition is also to keep from offending muslims. This is from muslimconvert.org:

A question often asked is "Are tattoos haram in in Islam ?"

The Answer is that permanent Tattoos are Haram in Islam and the Prophet of Allah has cursed the person who has tattoos done on them and the one on whom tattoos are done.

While I personally think someone getting large-scale tattoos is nuts, that isn't for religious reasons, and it is their choice. Not so in islam. Dhimmitude has come to the US military.

What rank did you obtain and in what branch of service in the US Military? Or are you just believing everything you read on the internet or hear in the media?

Tats don't... but depending on what they are of, they can lead to breakdowns in good order. We definitely need to look at education and see what we need to change to teach people to think for themselves, analyze stuff, etc. I bet if Wikipedia got shut down before student finals you'd see like a hundred thousand seniors flunk out.

The obesity problem has lots of consequences for the national cost of health care as well as the Army's recruitment issue. Observe the condition of our citizens anywhere you go, and the obesity epidemic is obvious. I can't offer a solution, but I think the lack of parenting and the abundance of trash food are part of the problem. Since obesity contributes significantly to nearly all of the major illnesses that are driving up health care costs, the problem, in financial terms, is huge.

Tats are a matter of personal choice, in my opinion, but the folks who go all out with tattoos covering major body parts are making a statement that I just don't understand. Does it affect their ability to serve productively in the military? I wouldn't think so, but it must indicate a negative behavoral characteristic if certain tattoos are disqualifiers for military service.

Use to be a young person could go into the military if they choose not to go to college. They may have not had the grades or finances to make college material. I being one, 52 years ago. I choose to go into the service to get away from a area that offered little in the way of jobs, unless you were into farming or aquaculture. I was not. I went into the USAF, and because I was good at math was assigned to an OJT program in the Acctg. & Finance field. I was in for 4 years and got promoted 3 times. By that time I was married and had a family. Pay was not good so I got out and worked my way up through business until I retired in 2005.
This info is to give you some idea of where I'm coming from. Todays youth, like their parents are 70% obese, look like a billboard for Satan, have so many metal objects in their face they look like they fell into a tackle box, and can't balance a checkbook. Most have no idea of the history of the US, and what is happening in our Liberal Progressive governed downward spiraling country. I am against the government giving "pink-slips" to our military forces, as I see it as a ploy to weaken America. you know what they say, "As America goes, so goes the world". This is all a ploy to establish a "One World Order or Government" as predicted in the Bible. It makes it plain to see why America will play little role in the "end times". We will be irrelevant.

If Ya can't afford to take care of your Vets, Ya can't afford going to War. JMHO

The VA has a very large budget. The VA here in Minneapolis, MN is spending a LOT of money redoing the lobby. I expect there are others around the country who are doing the same. Spending money on face lifts on their buildings and giving themselves nice fat raises and bonuses. I would have no problem with that except for the fact that it has been exposed the VA has let some Vets die while waiting for treatment!

That tells me we do have the money to treat our Vets! Our "wonderful and caring" gubment wastes enough money that we could fight a couple of wars with the waste and still have money left over!

It used to be the GS (Gov't Service) wanted to ensure NO waste, abuse of fraud of the Gov't dollar. NOW and for the past 20 years, it's all about waste, abuse and committing fraud. Aided and abetted by the Communist n Chief appointing his crew into the ES (Appointed Executive Service) over seeing the GS populace we now have rampant draining of tax payer dollars to those that do not, have not and cannot perform above their proscribed jobs. Plus forge gov't documents for their own reward. Hence why I have consistently email and called my Rep and Senators to have immediate FBI investigation into this mass raping of the American people and worst yet the raping of those that have served honorability.
It's a shame as well, being that most Active Duty that does perform above what their duties requires only gets MAYBE a pat on the back or possibly a promotion to the next pay grade. Usually the only bonus they get is a BONE US.
-
Again NOT anti government just PRO Constitution. Appointment of ES personnel by campaign contributors verses those that are qualified has perpetuated this corruption of our system and the electoral process. BOTH sides of the aisle are to blame.

Just heard an article on the news today that said that 81% of obese students thought they looked ok. 70% of the population of America is obese. Looks like to me the first thing America needs to do is admit they have a problem. When one fat person looks at another fat person and says I'm not too fat, there is a problem. Lets face it, you're both fat. Comparing yourself to another fat person is like one crazy person comparing themselves to another crazy person, You're both crazy. Nowhere on Earth are there as much devoted to eating as here. I'll bet there are at least 200 TV shows with either cooking show or cooking segments on them. Unhealthy fast-food joint commercials on nearly back to back. Heart attacks and diabetes is at an all time high and climbing. America is eating itself to death. We don't have to worry about a foreign country attacking us. Just show us a burger or chicken wing and we surrender. What a sad situation. America was healthier 75 years ago when food was rationed. Maybe we should ration ourselves. But, then again we are a self entitled society. We thing we should have everything we desire. Instead of a lean, mean fighting machine, we are becoming a bunch of reject slobs, not even fit to carry a gun in combat.
