"WASHINGTON — The Pentagon plans to destroy more than $1 billion worth of ammunition although some of those bullets and missiles could still be used by troops, according to the Pentagon and congressional sources.

It's impossible to know what portion of the arsenal slated for destruction — valued at $1.2 billion by the Pentagon — remains viable because the Defense Department's inventory systems can't share data effectively, according to a Government Accountability Office report obtained by USA TODAY.

The result: potential waste of unknown value," Report: Pentagon to destroy $1B in ammunition

This issue was raised today on Allen West's blog, and asks some good questions: Link Removed

I'm sure there are many here today who, along with the Allen West blog, ask where this "surplus" ammo was while you were serving and being told there was an ammo shortage.

Imagine the revenue the government could raise if they SOLD the milsurp ammo?

Could be a lib plot to keep ammo out of the hands of gun loving, political incorrect, Bible thumping, bigoted, Conservative people! Keep buying up ammo and destroying it!

It is mind blowing that the same Pentagon that GIVES MRAPS to cities or counties (along with free parts to keep them going), that also knows that police departments are having difficulty getting their hands on ammo, will destroy it rather than make taxpayer-purchased ammo available to local law enforcement.

The brainchildren in Washington need to justify the purchase of something new costing 1000 times what they are destroying. They say the ammo is unstable and may cause misfires or hang-fires during combat. I remember using ammo from WWII in Nam with no problems. They just want to keep it out of our hands or should I say our guns.

That ammo should be considered as paid for by we the people so therefore we should request it be returned to us.

I emailed my senators and rep asking for an assortment of ammunition since we the taxpayers paid for it. It will be interesting to see the response I get. I imagine the responses will likely have nothing to do with my request either and they will babble on about something non related.

I doubt you will even get a reply. I sent 2 emails to an Illinois Senator about a bill she proposed about registering our firearms. No reply. Not even an off topic auto reply. My feeling is they want no debate over the things they do.

Nah...they'd never do that would they? This is the most honest and transparent administration ever and has the people's best interest in mind-- always.

There is no way! I'll believe in superman before I believe they destroyed a billion dollars worth of stuff. Who does that?

I'm sure they could ask double what they paid for it and sell most, if not all, of it. OK, I read this after I posted it and realize what a stupid idea this would be. The government would screw it up somehow, even with the extra thousands of people they'd have to hire, not to mention the millions of dollars in over run costs. Sorry.

Howdy,

There is no way! I'll believe in superman before I believe they destroyed a billion dollars worth of stuff. Who does that?

Gee, that's an easy one........

The man that makes that call has the ammo company stuffing his pocket with money.

Pretty simple.

Paul

P.S. Don't blame this on Obama because it wS happening way before he was ever born on a dirt floor of a mud hut in Kenya.
